Problem Specification:

Resources under utilisation:

  1. Many spare staffs causing more wages
  2. Many spare rooms
  3. High maintenance cost
  4. Many facilities unused

Other problems:

  1. Too many papers and folders making it hard to organise.
  2. Unnecessary money spends on buying equipment such as cabinets etc.
  3. Work is been done less efficiently and slowly with many mistakes.

Suggested ideas:

  1. Offering children birthday parties

Involved:

  1. Computerisation
  2. Publicity
  3. Record keeping-sorting-identifying
  4. Feasibility study

Details:

Our leisure centre currently hires more than 30 staff. And by doing some research, I found that many of the staff was working less efficiently than a specific standard. Many possible solutions have been made to solve that problem such as creating new jobs etc. The current situation has cost the leisure centre many irrelevant expenses.

We also have problem about the under utilisation of the leisure centre. We are not fully occupied at any time of the working days and not all the rooms are being used at all. So this has certainly increased the maintenance costs of the leisure centre.

One of the possible solutions was to introduce birthday parties to the children of our members. Hopefully this will reduce the amount of utilisation in the leisure centre and recover the maintenance costs.

To introduce the parties, we would make the staff work more efficiently by giving them more work to do. This will certainly increase the profit.

In order to reduce the amount of wastage in the leisure centre, computerisation has been suggested. This will result staff being more comfortable as their work is more modern thus creating a good atmosphere and an improvement in the efficiency.

Analysis:

Possible solutions:

(1)(2)(3)(4) = Offering new activities (birthday parties)

(5)(6)(7) = Changing the working facilities (computerisation)

Details:

To offer new activities such as children birthday parties, we need to consider many factors such as the cost of setting up the activity and the cost of running it. The cost can be estimated roughly and compared with the profit estimated. If this solution was possible, it can dramatically decrease the outgoing of the leisure centre. Not only that but it would also help us to gain more customers to join our leisure centre.

By computerisation, we can improve the workers own self-satisfaction as they felt their job is been more up-to-date and technological. This can also improve on the data of the current database as papers and folders were everywhere, which makes it impossible to find a specific piece of information if required. The process of new data is very slow on the current system, so hopefully after the new system was set up, it would speed up the process. Computerisation makes the entire leisure centre seemed new and interesting and creates an attracting atmosphere, which always interests people.

In my leisure centre case, by using computers, we can organises parties events where it would make it much more easier for booking and organising data.

Feasibility Study:

Objectives:

(1) The leisure centre could offer new activities provided that the costs were suitable.

Technological terms:

This process is possible due to the extra staffs and facilities. Also the technology is available for such processes. Computers and its relevant software will be able to provide sufficient help. The new computerised system will be mainly consisted of computers, printers, network connections, scanners, monitors, backup tapes and software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and other specific software related to the running of the leisure centre.

Economical terms:

By offering this new activity, we can increase the income of the leisure centre and reduce the amount of resource utilisation. But we also have to consider the costs of buying the computerisation equipment since they are very expensive.

Social terms:

This will be accepted instantly by the public when it was launched because many of our members do have children and sometimes when their children want to have a birthday party, the parent will grant them but with the minimum hassle. So the new leisure centre could help them to achieve that. Also since we will be offering new activities, there will be more customers coming to us with their children so it would be a great opportunity to improve the leisure centre’s public image. When the newly computerised system is installed, it will bring many comforts to the employees in the leisure centre, because people no longer have to spend hours and hours writing and drawing tables/data, people can just sit on a chair and type all the relevant data into the system. There will be far less physical demands from the employees.

Cost/benefit analysis:

Costs:

(1) New equipment are needed

  1. Cost of publicity
  2. Cost of maintenance
  3. Training

Benefit:

  1. Attract more customers
  2. Increased profit
  3. Increased publicity
  4. Reduction in resources utilisation
  5. Staff feel motivated
  6. Overall performance in work become more efficient

Designs:

Offering birthday parties

Conclusion:

It would be worth going ahead by offering birthday parties to members’ children.

Objectives:

(2) Changing working facilities inside the leisure centre.

Technological terms:

This process will be possible because there are available system and software. The hardware in which the leisure centre should acquire are computers, printers, network connections, scanners, monitors, backup tapes and the software would be Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and other specific software related to the running of the leisure centre.

Economical terms:

After installing this system, it would dramatically decrease the monthly outgoing of the leisure centre because there will be less storage space needed and less staff needed.

Social terms:

The members would accept this process because nowadays everybody has a computer at home and people are getting used to the environment of modern technology. By setting up password protection to the member’s personal information, the leisure centre will ensure the confidentiality of the customers. The employees in the leisure centre will be motivated because they will feel that the leisure centre values them by spending lots of money implementing the computerised system to make less work for the employees

Cost/benefit analysis:

Cost:

  1. Setting up the system
  2. Maintenance

Benefits:

  1. Less paperwork
  2. Fewer mistakes
  3. Data is processed faster so more efficient
  4. Flexible

Designs:

Setting up a computerised network

Conclusion:

It would be worth going ahead with this project by setting up a new computerised network.

Methods of marketing:

Broadcast:

Television = this is one of the most common way for advertising as nearly everyone watches television everyday. I think if I would use this type of advertising technique, I would only use it for a short term, perhaps during the introduction stage of the activity because this type of advertising is very expansive, if it was used for long term, it could have serious effects on the profit gained. My offering activity is a birthday party for the children of my members, so the time which most appropriate for advertising is around 4 to 8 p.m. because that’s when most children and their parents watches television. It wasn’t suitable to advertise any other time because if it’s too early, the children are still in school, and if it’s too late; they would have gone to bed already. I don’t think Saturdays and Sundays are suitable because most weekends, people wanted to relax a bit after a week of hard work, so they would be most likely to take their children out for a picnic or something, no one really wanted to stay home and watch TV all day.

Cinema = this is another good way to promote a product as it was similar to TV promotion in many aspects. The film showing also has influence on the advertising; it’s pointless to show the advert before an 18 film because the people watching it were no my target audience. It would be suitable to show the advert before a U rated film because that’s where most children were available. I think it would be best to decide whether to put the advert on or not depending on the film that’s currently showing.
