Introduction

Applied ICT: Unit 3 Coursework Introduction For this coursework, I will be researching on "Instant Messaging" and using surveys to analyse on how people use instant messaging and why they use it when they know the advantages and disadvantages of using an IM application. I have carried out surveys that include a varied age range so that I do not drop into the band of biased end results. An IM application is used throughout the globe as a feature of the WWW to connect globally efficiently and instantly. The different IM applications offer different support and service. I will also find out what features of an IM application using my pre-purposed survey. I will then use the results from the survey and export them in to the database. To use a more inverted survey, I could have used an online questionnaire using MYSQL and that could be used for accurate transfers of results as it enters the database automatically. I am unable to do this as it is too difficult for me to carry out. I used a database application whereas in this case Microsoft Access. I could have used a spreadsheet for a flat database but a database application such as Microsoft Access has more features to choose from. They do not need much updating as long as the safety precautions are extended and not focusing on a specific safety issue of using the software. Websites that are hosted as .com or .co.uk are generally made by public around the world and only few of them are reliable from which some are well known websites such as www.microsoft.com, www.bbc.co.uk, www.google.com and www.symantech.com. These websites do not fit in the category of using .org, .net, .edu or .gov because they are worldwide sites. Schools would use websites such as www.school.edu and government based websites would use www.goverment.gov. An organisation trying to focus on a specific point would use www.organisation.org. Websites with such domains are generally more reliable than .com and .co.uk because they are controlled by an authority of groups of people. Websites I have used for searching to allow me to complete my simple, refined and advanced searches are: > www.google.com > www.yahoo.com > www.ask.com > www.live.com > www.altavista.com > www.wiredsafety.com > http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yourself/email/imsafety.mspx I can bookmark websites for quick access to it and can also set it to work offline so that I can access the current bookmarked page without the use of an internet connection.
