Applied ICT: Unit 3 Coursework

Introduction

For this coursework, I will be researching on “Instant Messaging” and using surveys to analyse on how people use instant messaging and why they use it when they know the advantages and disadvantages of using an IM application. I have carried out surveys that include a varied age range so that I do not drop into the band of biased end results.

An IM application is used throughout the globe as a feature of the WWW to connect globally efficiently and instantly. The different IM applications offer different support and service. I will also find out what features of an IM application using my pre-purposed survey.

I will then use the results from the survey and export them in to the database. To use a more inverted survey, I could have used an online questionnaire using MYSQL and that could be used for accurate transfers of results as it enters the database automatically. I am unable to do this as it is too difficult for me to carry out. I used a database application whereas in this case Microsoft Access. I could have used a spreadsheet for a flat database but a database application such as Microsoft Access has more features to choose from.

They vary from searching within general links and more conformed topics such as search engines for jobs, news, and multimedia, for the use of searching for jobs, properties and etcetera. I will initiate the different type of searches from simple to advanced searching keeping in mind the biased and accurate aspects of using a search engine as some general search engines are only good in some sort of searches.

Some main search engines used in the WWW:

  • Google
  • Yahoo
  • MSN Live Search
  • Ask
  • AltaVista
  • Rediff
  • Recruit
  • YouTube
  • TorrentSpy

Firstly, I will show use of similar searching through a variety of search engines available to the users of the internet. I will use search engines from the most recognised search engines such as Google, Yahoo, AskJeeves, MSN Live Search and AltaVista. To prove that each search engine gives different search results I will test the results first.

When I search “Instant Messaging” in:

Google:

Yahoo:

AskJeeves:

MSN Live Search:

AltaVista:

The above shows me that none of the search engines are similar in any way and all give different number of results by a great deal. I have typed in “Instant Messaging” in all of the above search engines accurately with all giving me worldwide results and the number showing next to the logo is telling us how many results the search engine has come up with. The only similar ...
