The impact of ICT on an adult in employment including the effect on his/her working style

In this essay I will thoroughly explain the impact of ICT on an adult, man and/or women, in employment including the effect on his/her working style.  In one of our recent lessons we had a school intervention officer in to explain the subject of ICT that he uses inside his job and in his social and personal life.  He was called Paul Stevens and he was in his late 30’s.  He firstly explained to us what ICT he uses when he is at his job working as a policeman.

The first thing he spoke to us about was his mobile phone; he described this as his asset when it comes to the pick out of all of his ICT equipment.  He specifically said that he uses this a lot in his job by doing a number of things like; contacting other colleagues and to contact other areas, other departments if there happened to be something that he had come across that would be more suitable for them to handle, like an accident or some kind of paper work or witnesses or suspects etc.

He uses a personal radio, also known as a “walkie-talkie”, to contact other colleagues and for them to contact him when they are on the go and hunting down a suspect, working as a unit, a team.  He told us that he does not carry this radio around with him all of the time, he only uses it for work, he uses a mobile phone outside of work, but he also clearly stated that he does use a mobile phone when he needs to contact other areas of the force and also to call other services like the ambulance etc or for receiving calls from other colleagues that need to contact him.

He said that he also uses a laptop instead of using a desktop PC.  He said that it was more convenient to have a laptop rather than a desktop PC because he can carry this around with him and edit or add data or notes to remind him what he needs to get done and to finish all of his assignments in his own time.  He mainly uses it to record details of suspects, details and documents.  He said to us that he only uses this at home to finish or to update some files and documents.  This laptop has a wireless Internet card, which allows him to search on the Internet whilst moving.  He uses the Internet so he can do some research and send some files, documents and/or details via e-mail.  He is unable and forbidden to use the Internet for social reasons such as for entertainment and downloading things that have nothing to do with work.  This is because the police force pays for him to have access to the Internet so he cannot abuse this privilege.

He said that the police force have subscribed to a new technology recently called a GPRS system. (GPRS) A GSM data transmission technique that does not set up a continuous channel from a portable terminal for the transmission and reception of data, but transmits and receives data in packets. It makes very efficient use of available radio spectrum, and users pay only for the volume of data sent and received.  This helps the police force to be able to trace all of there panda cars and undercover cars are to know what they are doing, exceeding the speed limits ...
