The Internet

The Internet is a very big Wide Area Network. The Internet started in 1969 as a research company by the US Military. Now it is an international computer Network connecting other networks and computers from other companies, universities etc. The Internet provides huge amounts of information. All the information on the Internet has been written by people although some information could be biased.

I personally find the internet very useful. All you need to get is a physical connection and a browser to get on the Internet. Most People use a computer and a modem connected to a telephone line. A modem converts computer signals that can be carries over telephone lines. Next you would need a Web Browser, the most common is Internet Explorer which comes as part of the Windows system, and there are also other web browsers. Lastly you would need the modem to dial up a computer owned by an Internet Service Provider (ISP). It is a company which offers their customer’s access to the Internet. This is most likely that you have to pay. For all this you get a vast pool of resources although it is quite expensive for the hardware and software to get the Internet. ISPs may also provide Internet e-mail accounts to users. After all that you can use your web browser.  A Web Browser is software for viewing WebPages. A web browser is a software application which enables a user to look at text, images, videos, music, games and other information located on a Web page at a website on the World Wide Web or a local area network. Text and images on a Web page can contain hyperlinks to other Web pages at the same or different website. Web browsers allow a user to quickly access information provided on many Web pages at many websites by using these links. Also Bookmarks help as well, they save the URLs you use often. The Back and Forward buttons can make you go back a page one at a time making this very helpful. Extra features can be added to Web Pages. These make it more exciting.

The Internet has Two Main Parts, The World Wide Web (WWW) and Electronic Mail (E-Mail). The World Wide Web is the part which contains web pages. I find this very useful as you can find information off this. E-Mail is the part where you can send messages from one person to another. This is all free; I find it much better than sending a letter.

Information is probably the biggest advantage internet is offering. You can almost find any type of data on almost any kind of subject that you are looking for. There is a huge amount of ...

Here's what a star student thought of this essay

The report does use good use of paragraphs, and the report is easily read and understood. The student has used a small number of technical terms such as WWW (World Wide Web), and described what this meant. Along with E-Mail (Electronic Mail), which the majority of students wouldn't state what this meant due to it seems to be overlooked on number of occasions. This report does explain what this terms are and explain them in-depth.

The report states the process on how a user is able to access the internet. The student states that the main internet browser is Internet Explorer, however the report could mention other various browsers and the market share of each of these to give a more detailed answer. In addition, it mentions selecting an ISP, to acquire high marks the report could give examples of companies offering the internet. This would give the user an idea of the speeds available to consumer's and at what price point. On the flip side, the description of how users view the internet by using an internet browser is highly detailed and describes what the browser does in order to view an website.

The report is quite good. There have explained how the internet was created, set-up and its purposed today. However the report could use greater use of how the internet is used in today's society. There isn't much on any real case studies linking to how the internet is used in today's society. The report starts with an introduction with the background of how the internet was created, with the additional of how the internet is used today. The report mentions a number of aspect where the internet is used, such as e-mails and information. The user has acknowledged that the internet is developing all the time, and it's a network where all users could have access to information.

The style of writing is largely informal and makes a habit of the unnecessary capitalisation of technical terms. Some minor grammatical errors are present. Considering this is a GCSE paper, the writer does indeed use the expected technical terms at this level.

The document contains very few examples and no citations to evidence statements. As a consequence, the writer draws inaccurate conclusions from factually incorrect assumptions. The writer does however demonstrate a good level of knowledge in using the WWW and popular services/applications, which as a result, the writer provides helpful information.

This document demonstrates an often misleading and basic understanding of the internet, with a number of factual errors. The introduction lacks a detailed definition or explanation of what the internet actually is, and furthermore, the rest of the document restricts the topic to experiences via a web browser. FTP? SSH or online/multiplayer gaming? Just to name a few. It would have been more accurate for the writer to rename the title to the World Wide Web (WWW), which is only one aspect of the internet. The consequences are prevalent throughout the document in which the writer gives the impression that the internet and the WWW is the same thing; most notable is in the third paragraph in which the writer describes the internet in two main parts consisting of the WWW and Email. The writer further gives the impression that web browsers are solely used for viewing web pages – which again, is incorrect. A web browser is essentially a client-side application – the writer could have described client-side and server-side technologies relevant to the internet and its users. The writer assumes that a physical connection is required to gain access to the internet, this is incorrect as today there are many alternative methods e.g. 3G and Wi-Fi. Even though these are simply a means of connecting to a physical access point, it is still wireless as far as the end-user or customer is concerned – especially in public places. As evidenced in paragraph 5, the writer lacks an understanding of information retrieval and search engine algorithms. On the other hand, the writer provides helpful information throughout the document and outlines various popular and key aspects of the WWW in modern day. It is recommended that the writer spends more time on researching technical terms.
