WHAT IS MEDICAL SCHOOL LIKE
Medical schools are usually within large universities and so the structure may look the same as the buildings around it. The time spent in medical school is dependant on the country but in the United Kingdom 5 years is the typical program. Real hospital settings are used at points in the program to replicate real life situations. This is usually at the end of training and long hours are spent in this for practice until perfection. There is much reading in study to be a doctor so applicants in medical school must be very patient.
HOW DO YOU GET INTO MEDICAL SCHOOL
Competition is very stiff for applications to get into medical school because there are more applicants than available places. Because of this oversupply of eager students, doctor schools can pick and choose who they want to train. Because medical school involves a lot of science reading, the strongest determining factor of whether you will be accepted is your grade performance at college in a science background - i.e. biology, chemistry and physics or mathematics. This means that working hard from early at college and toward a science major increases your chances of landing a place in medical school and becoming a doctor. This requires hard work from the start of college/ sixth form.
What kind of person can become a doctor?
Not anyone can become a doctor. People wishing to become doctors must have certain qualities; these qualities are common among doctors. Some of these are: logical, meticulous, disciplined, caring, and a team player. In wanting to become a doctor, people must work with these qualities and work towards becoming a disciplined person. Many students start out with varying degrees of the other traits but without the discipline to come to class/work everyday, to push yourself when it's uncomfortable, and to stick to your books, you won't make it. The other qualities can be formed during Medical School itself. Doctors aren't born, they're made. This requires much training.
FOR BECOMING A DOCTOR
Advantages in doctors are very common. Being able to change someone’s life for the better makes you feel that you have an important role and are an important person. Turning a frightening situation into a beneficial one is very heart warming one and relieving. Seeing a patient smile again when they leave the ward is a happy thought as it shows that if the person was not treated he would not be as happy as the patient looks. The money a doctor earns is very good but some people argue that they don’t deserve every penny.
AGAINST BECOMING A DOCTOR
Doctors are usually working under enormous pressure working enormously long hours. Doctors are not 100% successful 100% of the time. Being able to cope with death-defying situations is bound to come up sometimes.
A caring job for caring people
(GP)
The work of a doctor is hugely rewarding and very varied. About 50% of doctors’ work in general practice (GP), which is dealing with everyday situations such as ingrown toenails to viral epidemics. General practitioners treat illnesses or refer patients to specialists, who specialise in a certain branch in medicine, e.g. paediatrics.
