4. To draw conclusions on analysis, state whether the prediction is correct.
Method
The data will be collected in-groups as this saves time. Every fourth word in a report will have the numbers of letters counted in it. This should give a good overall view to the word length in a section. Similar sections from each newspaper will be counted as to keep it fair. For example sports will be counted from newspapers, so will economics and politics. This is to give an overall view of the newspapers and so not just one area is studied. From each section the same number of words will be used to keep the investigation fair.
Broadsheet
||||| = 5
The overall total is 100 for this broadsheet newspaper. Now I am going to do the same for a tabloid newspaper
.
Tabloid
||||| = 5
Now I am going to make a frequency table for both of my results.
Broadsheet
The Times newspaper
Mode
The mode for the newspaper is 3.
Range
The range is 26 – 1 = 25
Median
Median is 4
Tabloid
Daily mirror
Mode
The mode for this newspaper is 2. The two letter words appeared more in the tabloid newspaper
Range
The Range is 16 – 1 = 15.
Median
Median is 5.
Interpretation/ Analysis
By looking at the tally charts and box plots for both The Times and The Mirror on the report on the front page it shows that there is a larger range from The Times. It has a range of 25 to the range of 15 from The Mirror. But the median is higher on the tabloid newspaper. The Times has 4 compared to the 5 of The Mirror (A difference of 1 letters per word).
Conclusion/Evaluation
My prediction is correct. In the conclusion the results suggest that The Times has more letters per word on average than The Mirror, but this does not mean that this is conclusive. There is only a small sample that has been taken. If there was more time larger, wider investigations could have been taken. I could have investigated other newspapers. I could also have investigated on the size of photographs or pictures that were in the papers, to see if there was a correlation between the size and number of pictures to the size of the words. A factor for there not being enough time was that I collected the results in a group but then lost the results. So I got some old newspapers from a couple of days ago which were available to me and started on my own results.
Word size might not mean that the paper is more profound or easier to read, this assumption I made may be false and invalidate the investigation, this means my conclusion is not definite and I can not take it far.
