Introduction

Handling Data-Mayfield High The purpose of this investigation is to find out whether the weight has a relationship with height. The outcome of this investigation will be useful to health services like surgeries and hospitals. The health services can use this information to make human beings fitter so they can live longer. The outcome of this investigation will only apply to the pupils in Mayfield High because the population I will get my sample from is Mayfield High which is a fictions school but the data is from a real school. Mayfield has a total of 1200 students. YEAR GROUP NUMBER OF BOYS NUMBER OF GIRLS TOTAL 7 150 150 300 8 145 125 270 9 120 140 260 10 100 100 200 11 84 86 170 These are all the records of all the students of Mayfield High. As you can see there is too many students for me to use in my investigation it will take way too much time so I will use a Stratified Random Sample of 5% from each year group to ensure my sample is made up in the same mix as the whole school I have also adjusted the number of boys and girls in each year to reflect the balance in each year group. ...read more.

  1. The relationship between height and weight for students of Mayfield High School.

The hypothesis to test will be as follow: "There will be a better correlation between height and weight if we consider boys and girls separately" We already have a random sample of 30 boys and 30 girls collected earlier. We will use that data collected to test the hypothesis above.

  2. Conduct an investigation comparing height and weight from pupils in Mayfield School.

for girls; however the sample for boys was much more spread out than the girls, where the range in the sample for boys was 66kg and the range in the sample for girls was 36kg. This is supported by the frequency polygons and the histograms, on the previous pages, as

to help analyse my data and then compare them to my hypothesis. Scatter graph The scatter graph shows two variables in one graph, and allows you to see what kind of correlation they have. There is a positive correlation between height and weight in the data, which supports my hypothesis greatly as I predicted this.

  1. Maths: Data Handling Coursework

We can see that boys are much taller than girls in year 11.The diagram shows that no girls in this year group weigh more than 70kg, whereas there are 13 boys who do. This also shows that in year 11, boys usually weigh more than girls.

  2. Testing 3 Hypotheses on Pupils Height and Weight.

I found that the averages usually got higher as the students got older. I found that the average height for year 7's is quite a bit lower than all the other years. I then found that the average height for the students in year 8 and 9 is the same.
