SCPR’s survey of 600 heterosexuals (1992) showed that 74% believed the age of consent should be the same for homosexuals as for heterosexuals.
Question 6; It should be legal to get married to a person of the same
sex.
Many women respondent ‘yes’ to this statement, with only 2 believing that marriage should not be allowed between same sex couples. By contrast, the males showed that few of them agreed with this statement, generally showing that they were either unsure or it should not be allowed – especially the younger age group.
DATA ANALYSIS
Question 7; Homosexuals should be allowed to adopt.
The males, by majority, either strongly disagreed or disagreed with this statement. The 60+ age group were all opposed – all disagreeing. Whereas the females were less against and 16/25 agreed with only 4 strongly disagreeing with the statement. In general the women were more in favour than the men of homosexuals being allowed to adopt.
Question 8; Homosexuals should not have the right to succeed a
Council house Tenancy.
Our research showed that the general opinion of the males was divided relatively evenly between agreeing and disagreeing, although the latter outweighed the former marginally. The females by the vast majority, believed that homosexuals should have a right to succeed a Council house Tenancy.
Question 14; Homosexuals should be given equal rights within
society.
A total of 16/25 males agreed with this statement, contradicting the results of question 6 and 7 as both are legal questions and were answered a little differently. Only 5 of the females disagreed, in the main said they agreed and homosexuals should be given equal rights.
MALE RESPONDENTS LESS TOLERANT
THE YOUNGEST AND OLDEST ESPECIALLY
- AND 22-30 YEAR OLDS SIMILAR IN VIEWS ON CERTAIN QUESTIONS
THE 60 + AGE BRACKET HEAVILY OPPOSED TO ADOPTION + CHILDREN BEING TAUGHT HOMOSEXUALITY
IN THE MAIN NOT IN AGREEMENT WITH MARRIAGE
MUCH DIVERSITY WITHIN THE MALE RESPONDENTS ANSWERS
16-21 YEAR OLDS – HUGE PERCENTAGE AGREED WITH HOMOSEXUALS HAVING EQUAL RIGHTS AND YET THIS DID NOT REFLECT THEIR VIEWS IN PREVIOUS QUESTIONS. FOR EXAMPLE; 4/5 BELIEVED HOMOSEXUALITY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED.
THIS DATA TALLIES WITH PREVIOUS RESEARCH IN THAT THE YOUNGER AND OLDER MALES ARE THE LEAST TOLERANT
NOW THE WOMEN SHOWED TO BE FAR MORE ACCEPTING AND OPEN-MINDED THAN THE MALES.
MORE LIABLE TO ADMIT TO KNOWING A HOMOSEXUAL.
MORE TOLERANCE TOWARDS A CONFESSION OF HOMOSEXUALITY
(ALTHOUGH 22-30 YEAR OLDS A LITTLE MORE UNSURE) .(ESP.A FAMILY MEMBER.
NONE OF OUR FEMALES SAID THAT HOMOSEXUAL SEX SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED.
ALL OF THE WOMEN,BAR 2, BELIEVED IN THE RIGHT TO MARRIAGE.
80% FELT THAT HOMOSEXUALS SHOULD HAVE EQUAL RIGHTS.
AGE DID NOT APPEAR TO EFFECT OPINION, NOT MUCH DIVERSITY.
AGAIN THESE RESULTS SHOW MUCH SIMILARITY TOWARDS SECONDARY DATA IN AS MUCH THAT WOMEN GENERALLY ARE MORE ACCEPTING TOWARDS HOMOSEXUALITY THAN MEN.
