How to Write a Good Story

Have you ever had to write a story for English homework or coursework, I have and as I lack the imagination substantial enough to write an A* novel I am going to take the easy way out. The first thing you need is a sheet or two of A4 paper preferably lined and a pen is always useful. Not forgetting an idea (that is most important) without an idea you have no story.

The best stories start with a plan, you will need to make notes about the setting, the characters and the story line. With a plan you can relate back to when you need your inspiration back. A basic storyline has four parts the start, the climax, the anti-climax and the ending. The start should set the scene and tell the reader about the main characters, don’t add too many because you will start to ramble on about nothing, about three or four are good.  Then start the climax, this should be the most important part of your story it should be the main part of your story, if you are writing an action story this will be the part where all the tension and trauma is bought into the story to make life hard for the main characters. With sentences, make them short, that shows tension during the bleakest part of the story. The anti-climax is when you let the reader down with a disappointing ending, you have to finish it slowly you can’t just say “then they were rescued” say how they were rescued and what there feelings at that time. Finally you need a good ending NEVER EVER end a story, “they woke up and it was a dream they woke up and went to breakfast.” End your story with what happened next, did they suffer any consequences? Tie up all of the loose ends and unsolved mysteries. The world’s best stories could have three or four build-ups and one huge climax; this takes the reader on a roller coaster ride more commonly considered a good book.

To make a truly fantastic novel you should always use devices, devices are words that do many things. You should aim to put at least one type of each device in every story you write. These devices are: Firstly onomatopoeias these are words that sound like what it is saying e.g. BANG. Secondly alliteration which is a collection of words that have the same first letter e.g. Stephanie’s Stories are Super. Thirdly metaphors, these are impressive in a story, they are a cluster of words that, when used correctly describe something unrealistically e.g. run ragged, truly you don’t even have ...
