3. Total employed in South East England broken down into full-time, part-time and self-employed workers.
Source: Cambridge Econometrics, 1997
Total employment in south east England is a forecast to grow during the period up to 2010, full time employment male and female is expected to decline. This is largely a result of its concentration in manufacturing and retail industries.
Total female employment is expected to rise largely as a result of its concentration on part-time employment. Part-time employment is expected to rise, growth will be based in service industries particularly retailing and hotel and catering. Self-employment is also expected to increase.
4. Unemployment in the UK (000’s)
Unemployment levels have being decreasing steadily in the past 9 years as you can see in the chart and graph above. Unemployment in the United Kingdom has reached its lowest level in twenty years. This is good news for the economy and the prosperity of the workforce, but low employment brings with it the risk of skill shortages.
4b. Regional Unemployment
The levels of unemployment in each region change dramatically. Below you can see the percentage of people unemployed in each region of the UK.
Source: Labour force survey (June – August 2000)
The North East is the highest with mines and ship yards going out of business.
5. Qualifications of suitable people in South East England.
In the above table shows what percentage of students have the qualifications specified in the chart. The highlighted area shows what qualifications are needed to become an office supervisor
6. Full-time and part-time pupils in school in the United Kingdom
From this chart you can see that the number of pupils in school has increased dramatically in the last ten years. This means there should be more young people with qualifications.
The number of students in full-time education (all ages) is 1,065 thousand. Below is a chart breaking this figure down into countries. You can see that England has by far the highest number of students in higher education. This is mainly because England has the largest population. The number of students staying on in higher education has increased.
This means that there are less young people available in the labour market. This means there will not be as many young people available for South East England to employ.
7. Skills shortages
The table above shows the different types of occupations people of London have/had in 2000. The highlighted area indicates the percentage of Managers and administrators there were nationally and/or London. This is the area Tesco would look into when recruiting an employee. It is clear that there are skills shortages mainly in Technical and Professional occupations in places other than London.
8. Annual earnings in London compared with other counties/cities – 1999
Above shows the annual earnings of three major cities’ employees compared with London’s. It is highlighted how much an Office supervisor got paid in the year 1999. An Office supervisor in London is paid exceptionally more than another Office supervisor in any of the other major cities. However, in London the standard of living was and still is much higher and this could have an effect on why the wage rate is a lot higher.
It is important for Tesco to keep a record of the labour market trends as this allows them to constantly monitor any changes in the country whether locally or nationally that may have a direct impact on their business. The labour market takes into account more than just the employment and unemployment figures; it also looks at other facts such as skills shortages and wage rates which need to be taken into account when hiring an employee. As Tesco want to know when they are hiring an employee that they are getting the best for their money and whether it would be possible to hire a better employee if they looked in the right places. Using the prediction of the age prediction of the working force tesco will be able to forecast the likely hood of how long an employee will last at the company and from this Tesco can begin preparations for recruiting a new employee when a current one is coming close to retirement age. Factors like these can only be determined from labour market trends as it is the only accurate and official source of information cumulated on the labour of England. Failure to comprise such detail for tesco would mean that they cannot set high targets of achievement as the workforce would not be the best that they could get as they have not done enough research into other employees available throughout the country. Labour market trends tells the company about the kind of contracts that potential employees are looking for example part time full time permanent etc. however if tesco do not take this into account and launch full time vacancies into a population which is primarily looking for part time vacancies then they will see that their productivity will be low as they will not have the employees to perform the jobs. If Tesco did not have this sort of information they would not be able to assess and monitor many of the issues that they may be subjected to when hiring an employee.
