Extracts from this document...

Introduction

Do the year seven and nine students from Mayfield high school who are taller weigh more? In this coursework, I will be investigating if the height goes up when the weight goes up by looking at the data from the year seven and the nine students at Mayfield High school. My hypothesis is taller people will weight more but obviously there will be a few exceptions as some people are tall and skinny and some are short and weigh more. In general, the taller people should weigh more than the shorter. ...read more.

Middle

I will need to collect 30 pieces of data and I will ensure it is a fair sampling by choosing every fifth data. In this data I will compare the heights and weights of pupils from year seven to year nine and males and females, I am going to use data from different years because I would like to see if age makes a difference, also I am comparing both sexes to see if that differs. Year 7 Female, Male & All together . From this scatter graph, I can surely say that the height has an effect on the weight. The weight goes up as the height goes up. ...read more.

Conclusion

So in general I will say from the investigation I made that older people are heavier and taller than the younger ones. All these discovering I made, might apply to other people everywhere. For example, it might be true that the weight goes up as the height increases. And also might be true that men are taller than women in general. I could have added two more year groups in Mayfield High School to extend my coursework. I would have added age if I were to do it again to make my coursework better so that I can be 100% sure, if age had effect on the height and weight, and if I could apply it everywhere. This is data that consists of numbers. Weights are an example of quantitative data. However quantitative data can either be continuous or discrete. Discrete data can only take particular values. For example, you can buy shoes in exact sizes (6, 6 1/2, 7, 7 1/2 etc.). These values are discrete and there are no values in between them, so discrete data has an exact value.

These results are based on a random sample of 25 boys and 25 girls, to confirm my results I could extend my sample or use another random sample and compare the results. I will now make a hypothesis about my data and try to back it up with scatter graphs.
