T-Total

Introduction

T-total is based around a shape. “T”. Which are always 3 squares across and 3 squares down. The digits inside the “T” will be added together to form the T-total. To which I will continue doing until I notice the pattern and right down the rule.

The “T” is located in a times grid. In my case it will be in a 9x9, 8x8 and 7x7 grid. You have to fit as many “T’s” in the grid to get the correct T-total.

The size would always have to start from a 3x3 grid. (Because the shape “T” is always 3across and 3down) as already mentioned.

To move the “T” you can move left, right down. To form as many “T’s”

The difference between T-number and T-total is that the T-number is the last number in your “T” square to complete the shape. Where as the T-total is the total numbers inside the “T” shape added together.

In T-totals I am expecting to find out the sequence pattern in the “T” shapes, the difference between the T-totals, the algebra and then to find out the formula.

The way I am going to do this is by drawing and shading in “T” shapes on a 9x9, 8x8 and 7x7 grid. I will shade in my “T” shapes in rough so I can right down the digits inside the shape to find my T-number, and then beside my numbers I will draw the shape and write the numbers inside so my teacher can know where I got my numbers from (proof) and have an understanding for my T-number.

After writing the numbers of the “T” shapes across and down. I will write the rule of the pattern formed in the numbers, give a short definition of my explanation of the rule. Then I will right down the results and the differences for the number grid across and down for each of the grid numbers 9x9, 8x8 etc.

I will then, write down for each grid the algebra equation. By seeing the differences between the digits inside the “T” shape and then adding them together to make an answer in algebra example total= T-total (T-9) + (T-19) = (T-18) = (T-17) = 5t-63. I will draw the “T” shape next to the algebra equation so my teacher can see where got my numbers from to form the formula.

Rotation;

Rotating the “T”. Will be to rotate the “T” shape 90 clockwise write down the digits inside the shape, find the pattern and write down the formula to each of the 3 size grids (9x9, 8x8 and 7x7). Repeat this by rotating the “T” shape 180 and 90  anti-clockwise.

9 X 9 Grid

I have a 9 x 9 grid that I will use to find the pattern for the T-total by moving the “T” shape across the grid (right) …

Total= 1+2+3+11+20=37

(T number = 20)

Total=2+3+4+12+21=42

(T number= 21)

Total=3+4+5+13+22=47

(T number=22)

I search for a pattern in the total numbers and write down the rule:

Rule: +5 on to the answer.

I use my 9 x 9 grid again but this time I use my “T” shape to go down, and see if I can spot the pattern for my T-total…

Total= 19+20+21+29+38=127

(T number = 56)

Total= 28+29+30+38+47=172

(T number= 47)

Total= 37+38+39+47+56=217

(T number= 56)

I repeat the process by looking for the pattern and writing down the rule:

Rule: +45on to the answer.

8 x 8 Grid

I have an 8 x 8 grid that I will use to find the pattern for the T-total by moving the “T” shape across the grid (right) …

Total= 1+2+310+18=34

(T number = 18)

Total= 2+3+4+11+19=39

(T number= 19)

Total= 3+4+5+12+20=44

(T number= 20)

I search for a pattern in the total numbers and write down the rule:

Join now!

Rule: +5 on to the answer.

I use my 8 x 8 grid again but this time I use my “T” shape to go down, and see if I can spot the pattern for my T-total…

Total= 9+10+11+18+26=74

(T number= 26)

Total= 17+18+19+26+34=114

(T number= 34)

Total= 25+26+27+34+42=154

(T number= 42)

I search for a pattern in the total numbers and write down the rule:

Rule: +40 on to the answer.
