“The female of the species is more deadly than the male.” How far do you agree that this is correct in relation to, “The Human Element”?

Thelma is ugly and she knows it. She has a sort of dull khaki coloured eyes, and a “suet pudding face”. The thing that she wants more than anything is to get married but she could not possibly. She is so unpleasant to look at she will never walk down the aisle, and the fact that she is terribly over weight does not help, right? Wrong! She may be as un-attractive as an ogre and as wide as a whale, but she does not have the brains of a dickybird. She is able to manipulate Harry in such a way that he goes from finding her incredibly annoying to being tricked into getting engaged to her.

Thelma is the queen of manipulation, and she learned from the master… Her mother.  I realised this as Ma Baynes and Old Man Baynes have a very unloving relation ship. Old man Baynes tries very hard to get away from her. Mainly through his sport. At one point Harry thinks to himself, “I Know Old Man Baynes and his sport. It’s the one thing Ma Baynes can’t override him on.” He means sport is the only thing Ma Baynes cannot drag him away from. Old man Baynes uses this to his advantage.
