Here's what a star student thought of this essay

There are a number of grammatical mistakes throughout this essay – the first paragraph begins with « Né au début du vingtième siècle », which should be « Née », as Simone de Beauvoir was a woman. S/he has used the future tense « Ils ne s'arrêteront de se rapprocher, et deviendront amants », when a past tense is required, as the events took place in the past. There are also some typing mistakes, for example, failing to capitalise the start of this sentence « pas n'importe quelles femmes pourtant », and « dont l'on voir l'influence » instead of « on voit » in the last paragraph. These are mistakes which could be eliminated with thorough proofreading, which is important for making a positive impression on the examiner, especially on a piece of coursework. Poor spelling and grammar looks very sloppy, and unfortunately, considering this essay’s high quality, lets this piece down.

The candidate has written comprehensively about de Beauvoir’s work and philosophy, showing an understanding and level of analysis which is well above average for GCSE level. There is a clear structure to the essay and a high level of personal engagement with the task, although perhaps the candidate could make his or her opinions more explicit within the essay, as this has to be clear to the examiner. From the third paragraph on the candidate discusses de Beauvoir's literary works - perhaps the candidate could offer his/her opinion on some of the books, if they have read them? What is the candidate's opinion on feminism? Or existentialism? This sort of personal engagement would help the candidate to bring the essay to an extremely high standard, although for a GCSE essay it is already a very good piece of work.

The candidate gives a very detailed response to the task, which is to write about a famous person. They have included a lot of detail on Simone de Beauvoir’s life and works, and her relationship with Jean-Paul Sartre, as well as her influence on modern feminism.
