How The Intensity of Exercise affects Heart Rate? Aim: To find how the heart rate is affected by exercise and the different intensities of exercise and why. Plan: Preliminary Test: This test will help determine the type of exercise the candidates will have to endure, how long they will endure it for and how the heart rate of the candidates will be measured. Firstly this test will help determine the nature of the exercise. Each candidate tested five different forms of exercise as shown below. Also the exercise must be a very simple operation as one candidate may struggle to grasp the technique of an exercise for example, Squat thrusts where another candidate may have a very fluid technique and have to exert less energy leading to the candidate having to respire less and therefore leading to an unfair heart rate. The exercise must also not be too strenuous but on the other hand also strenuous enough to show a large enough increase in the heart rate to show a relationship. The exercise must not be too strenuous, as it must be carried out for a period of five minutes at a constant rate. To be sure of how to measure the heart rate a small test was conducted in which after a five-minute exercise the heart rate of each candidate was measured, as shown in the table below. Candidate Sphygmomanometer Reading Manual (Human taking a pulse) A 130 125 B 117 121 C 98 95 As shown by this test the sphygmomanometer reading is much more accurate than a human reading and so will be used to measure the heart rate as the human error is too great. Third and finally the amount of time the candidates will endure the exercise for is five minutes.
