 ‘It is not possible to be a true disciple of Jesus in the modern world’. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer, showing that you have considered more than one point of view.

           I agree with this statement because as Jesus is not physically here it makes it harder for people who lack faith to be a disciple. People today do not take their religion and there are falling numbers in people attending Church. The world today is full of violence; there is war in the Middle East and famine in Africa and Ethiopia. People make excuses and say that they are too busy to help others. This clearly shows what Jesus demanded, disciples did not do, “If any-one wishes to follow me he must deny himself.”, Mark 8:33-34. What Jesus meant about carrying your cross, people have watered down and not taken it as seriously or literally as he had meant. Famous people can turn to Christianity, e.g. Glen Hoddle, Britany Spears, but they are certainly in the minority.

             On the other hand others may disagree because lots of good deeds we do each day count as ways of being a disciple. Even though we live in a cruel and violent world, there are people who are trying to make a difference and help, and there are people, who have, e.g., Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. There are many lay people, priests and nuns who live lives of discipleship. Jesus’ teachings are still important today so people can still follow them.
