In the church the word baptism is a Christian sacrament that signifies spiritual cleansing and rebirth; some baptize infants and but some insist on adult baptism like the Baptist church. Baptism always takes place in public as it is regarded as a kind of announcement, or confession, of faith as well as a chance to witness to those who do not share the same beliefs. To be baptized you must be a believer, this is when someone puts their faith in Christ and go in for Salvation. It is only then that someone can be baptized. It is practical for a person to be baptized as soon after being saved as possible but you must inform a pastor and he will arrange a time for you to be baptized. A baptism usually takes place as part of a Sunday service at which the Lords Supper is not celebrated. At the baptism the tank is opened and the pastor dressed in shirt and trousers descends into the tank which is filled with water to the waist. The person being baptized will then step in after him. The pastor will ask “do you now confess Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour?” the candidate answers “I do”. The pastor then replies “On confession of your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, I now baptize you in the name of the son and the father and the holy spirit”. The person being baptized is then plunged into the water and then is quickly brought back up to the straight position and is dried. A Baptist pastor may speak on the topic of baptism e.g. the book of Matthew where Jesus was baptized and relevant hymns are also sung in accordance. The congregation are watching during all this and are there to see the work of the Lord being done and are always happy to watch. The families of the baptized will also attend the service to give the person moral support and to show them that what they are doing is ultimately right and that they support what they are doing. People from outside the congregation are always welcome to watch in the hope that the Lord will reach out and save their souls also through the baptism taking place.

In a baptism in the Baptist church you are fully emerged in the water opposed to being sprinkled with water. The concept of immersion or baptism by water originates with the ceremonial cleansing and washing of the priests when the priesthood was set up in the days of Moses and Aaron which you can read about in Exodus 29. When someone is immerged it symbolizes their sins be totally removed and that when they are submerged in the water and are brought back out again it is all removed and a new life begins in the Lord. ...
