Baptism is the rite of initiation into the Christian church and the family of God, it is important because it's the start of Christian life. Christians believe that because of the disobedience of Adam and eve in the Garden of Eden all people are born with Original Sin and this needs to be removed before they can begin their lives as Christians. The ceremony starts at the back of the chapel where the child and parents are welcomed and the priest invites them to come to the baptismal font where the priest then speaks to the parents "You have asked for your child to be baptised in doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training him to practice the faith" He makes a sign of the cross on the child as a sign that he belongs to God. ...read more.

Water is poured three times over the forehead while the following words are being said "In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit." The child is then anointed with chrism oil as a symbol that the child is being called up to take the task of living according to the values which Christ gave his followers and chrism is a reminder that the new Christian shares in the life of Jesus.
