Cohabitation
“Cohabitation is better than marriage.” Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer showing that you have thought about more than one point of view. (In other words give four reasons for and four reasons against living together.) 16
The definition of cohabitation here means people of the opposite sex living together or sleeping together on a very regular basis sharing sex and sharing in many ways the expenses of life.
I think that marriage is better than cohabitation because that about 40% of couples who live together before they marry break-up and of the remaining 60% that do marry over 40% of them divorce after 10 years of marriage, and also I think marriage is better because people in cohabitation might want to look for a snug relationship but not have anything serious, this is normally called the Linus Blanket relationship. The Linus Blanket relationship is a cohabitating relationship that is founded on the overwhelming need to be involved with somebody. Another reason is that either the male or female cohabiter might just be using the other cohabiter to be able to stay in a nice warm house with all the essentials until he/she finds her/himself the perfect partner so if they get married then they won’t want to leave because of all the legal fees. My auntie and uncle cohabit and my auntie has got no trust for my uncle because they are not legally joined. She wants to get married he says that they should wait until their child is a little older. Another reason why I think cohabitation is not a good idea is that if you cohabit with a partner then you are not legally joined and you could not go out and say “Hi, this is my Wife!” you would have to say “Hi This is my partner” and that does not have the same ring. It will also build your trust up because a divorce can be a sticky process and can cost a lot.
