Companionship in The Da Vinci Code

Companionships/Relationships play a major role in The Da Vinci Code.  These companionships for the most part are between people, but they can also be between a person and a religion, an item and a religious group, and group of people and an item.  The first real companionship that shows up in the book is between Robert Langdon, a Harvard symbologist and Sophie Neveu, a French cryptologist.  They meet because they are working together to find out who killed Jacques Sauniere, Sophie’s grandfather and important religious figure.  That brings up the next relationship, which is between Sophie Neveu and her grandfather Jacques Sauniere.  Sauniere took care of Sophie during her childhood.  They were great friends until Sophie came home early from college and saw her Grandfather participating in a religious ceremony she did not approve of.  Another major relationship in the book is between Langdon and Teabing.  Langdon decides to seek refuge Teabing when the Bezu Fache and the whole police force are searching for him to (wrongfully) arrest him.  Teabing has been doing research and searching for the Holy Grail for years, so he comes along with Langdon and Neveu to search for it.  Simon is a character who is a devoted member of the Opus Dei.  His relationship with the Opus Dei is such that he will do extreme acts of “devotion” such as wearing a cilice (a belt with spikes that dig into his skin).  The next relationship is between the Holy Grail and the Priory of Sion, an ancient religious group in which Jacques Sauniere is one of the four top members.  The Priory of Sion takes on the responsibility of keeping the grail safe and hidden from groups and people who want to do harmful things with it.
