“Europe in the 15th century was very different to Europe today”

I do believe that Europe in the 15th century was different to present day Europe, mainly because of technological advances, freedom of speech, advances in the way people thought, acted and what they believed in.

There are many differences between 15th century Europe and present day Europe, such as the way religion played an important part in the day to day running of people’s lives.

The church was heavily involved within the local community and provided many services for the community such as medical care, sanctuary and education to some. Nowadays people don’t get that involved in the church, many people consider themselves Christians although they rarely attend church and don’t follow the teachings of the bible as their counterparts in the 15th century would have. The church also has changed; there are many different branches of the church whereas there was only really one main one in the 15th century. I believe that because of corruption in the Roman Catholic church and the fact it resulted in people worshiping in groups at home, just as they would’ve if they still attended church, they learnt about their religion in their own way, this I believe lead to people interpreting Christianity differently leading to “splinter” churches. Also the services the church provided are very much a distant memory, they no longer provide medical services due to the way the medical world has advanced along the centuries because of the fact that the church was over thrown and people were finally allowed to learn things other than what the church deemed ok, which included medical teachings and the right to carry out dissection which helped the medical world to progress. Education is no longer only provided by the priests, the government now takes major priority, although there are still schools which have the religious influences and still employ priests and nuns to teach such as Our Lady’s Convent School. Also education is now available to everyone, not just to people who were involved with the church or royalty. Sanctuary is however still provided; this is one of the only things that have stayed fully in tact when it comes to the church.

Women in the 15th century were very oppressed they had no real standing and were considered far inferior to men, they had no or little education. They were valued for their domestic and childbearing skills and were expected to stay out of important roles; even female monarchs were partially frowned upon. Now women have equal rights, they are entitled to the same type of education that men receive although it is only recently that this has taken full effect, women were still seen to be the ones who stayed at home whilst men got higher education’s in the 1970’s/80’s.
