How Does Evil Present a Challenge to Religious Faith? (20)
The problem of evil has been a challenge for religious faith for thousands of years with various philosophers coming up with various explanations to explain why evil exists in world created by God. The history of man has not been one that many are proud of. Wars, genocide, poverty and child abuses are examples of bad events that have been with and are still with us today.
If one was to say two comments the first being that ‘God is omnipotent and the benevolent creator of all things’ and then say ‘there is evil in this world’ it creates a problem. How can the God of classical theism allow evil in his creation? He has supreme power and has in his power the ability to do anything that we can conceive of and more. There is no apparent obstacle that should stop him doing this. He is a benevolent creator so everything he makes has love in it. He created man ‘in his image’ and blessed him with all good intentions. It is irretrievable to accuse this God in designing a world with evil in it or deliberately creating evil, as this would not be in line with his all-loving nature. If God can do anything then his creation cannot be a bad design but instead perfect in every way. If any evil was top arise it could be stopped by God as it is within his boundaries to do so, so why doesn’t he? If there were to be a ‘devil’ God would still have the upper hand according to classical theism and overcome him to stop the spread of evil. If he couldn’t he would not be all-powerful.
