The significance of the trial before the Sanhedren is that Jesus was not given basic human rights at the trial and Jesus was arrested at night which was illlegal under Jewish law and none of the witness statements agreed with eachother.
Early in the morning the chief priests met hurrieldy and they put Jesus in chains,led him away,and handed him over to Pilate.Pilate questioned him,”Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered,”So you say”. At every passover festival Pilate was in the habit of setting free any one prisoner the people asked for.At that time a man named Barabbas was in prison because he commited murders.The crowd started asking Pilate for the usual favour.He asked them “Do you want me to set free the king of the jews?” He knew full well the priest were jelous of Jesus.The priests stired up the crowd and got them to shout “free Barabbas” so that’s what Pilate did.
The significance of this is, the Sanhedrin had to pass Jesus to Pilate because they did not have the authority to sentence someone to death.It was costomary during passover to realease a prisoner.The crowd chose to let Barrabas free and the crowd condemed Jesus to death. Pilate washed his hands of the responsibility for Jesus’s death (symbolickly).Pilate did not want to put Jesus to death but he had no choice.
The soldiers took Jesus inside to the courtyard of the governor’s palace and called togeather the rest of the company.They put a purple robe on Jesus,made a crown out of thorny branches,and put it on his head.Then they began to salute him: “Long live King of the Jews!” They beat him over the head with a stick,spat on him,fell on their knees,and bowed down to him and the soldiers forced him to carry his cross they took Jesus to a place called Golgotha (The place of the skull) there they tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh but Jesus would not drink it .The notice of accusation against him said “ king of the Jews.
These events were sienificant because they fulfill what is written in the Old Testement about the suffering of the Messiah and also the colour purple is a sign of king ship .At noon the whole country was covered with darkness.At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud shout “Eloi,Eloi,lema sabachthani? “ Which means “My God,my God ,why did you abandon me ?” With a loud cry Jesus died.The curtain hanging in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.The army officer who was standing there in front of the cross saw how Jesus had died.”This man was the Son of God “he said.
This is signifucant because by dying on the cross Jesus fulfillied what was written in the old testement.God sent his son to save his people from sin.It was Jesus mission to die.Jesus was also challenged to save him self, but he chose not to.The curtain in the temple ripping in half symbolizes the ending of the old covernant between god and his people.
