Is it possible to be a disciple of Jesus in the modern world?

"Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." (MK 10: 14 - 16).

As we move to the next stages of our life, from childhood into teenage years we gradually become more selfish and self-centred; and it is at this point in our lives that we can demonstrate our discipleship by motivating ourselves to help others; thought group activities. For example fund raising for Children in Need, doing voluntary work or by taking individual action by being aware of other peoples needs and their personal circumstances.

As young adults we can participate more fully as disciples by giving example to other people by living honourable, moral, thoughtful lives by showing care, courtesy and consideration to others; and by showing respect for other people and ourselves.

In the next stage of our lives many of us take on the role of married adults. This provides the opportunity for them to become parents, and to nurture our own children in the Christian faith. The role is very important because it enables us to transfer our Christian faith from one generation to the next. Parents have a responsibility for ensuring that their children have the benefit of a proper Christian upbringing. They teach their children morality, equality and love for people, and love and devotion for God.

In the final stage of our lives we have the opportunity and the time to share our experiences and knowledge with the younger generation, to lead by example and to provide help and assistance to our children and grandchildren.

Disciples of Jesus today still need to show compassion to others, be forgiving and be non-judgemental. They need to put others before themselves thus; many of the qualities Jesus expected of his first disciples remain the same for his followers today.

To a certain extent I agree with statement "It is not possible to be a true disciple of Jesus in the modern world." There may be other commitments in people's lives, which may hinder them from being a disciple of Jesus. I also think that a lot of people in the modern culture are forgetting about their religion altogether through thoughts of their own. Many Christians believe that too many people are being influenced by fictional television and music lyrics, it is of my opinion that this directly pushes people away from the Christian faith and discipleship.
