1a- “The need for world development”

-The north/south divide

Recently (in the last 20-30 years) the world has dramatically divided into often called “first world” countries (these that are more economically developed). They enjoy high living standards.

Countries that go under “first world” are: -     USA

  • Western Europe
  • Australasia
  • Canada

“Third world” countries (these that are less economically developed) are very poor and have a huge lack of development. Most of the third world countries are found in the South of the world.

First world countries tend to be much more richer than third world for number of reasons. One of them is that some of the third world countries such as Egypt can’t develop because 90% of the country is covered in sand so therefore there is not enough farming soil, but there are other reasons for countries lack of development. Those poorer countries do not receive as much help as they could from the rich countries.

The diagram above shows the north and south divide.

- Absolute & Relative Poverty

People around the world suffer from different degrees of poverty. Different levels of poverty can be seen in all countries. Some people suffer from “relative poverty”. Relative poverty can be seen in those more economically developed countries and is not as bad as absolute poverty. Relative poverty exist in those rich countries and different parts of that country can be richer or poorer than other parts (e.g. south of England is richer than the north of England). Important thing is that those people are not starving to death the have money for small amount of food, clothes plus things that most of people that suffer from absolute poverty do not have or can not afford.

“Absolute poverty” is lacking in the basics of life to survive such as food, water, housing, education and other essentials. The worlds poorest countries try to make a living out of agriculture (nearly 75% of the whole population in that country) till in Britain only 6% do. People grow their crops just to survive, just enough to feed them selves and their families. They get left with no money to buy or sell other items.

-Reasons for absolute poverty

In less developed countries reasons for absolute poverty might be due to the wars, as this is often the case in South African countries.

Throughout history European countries have colonised African countries and people. Colonisation lead to many battles including civil wars. Civil wars lead to destruction of farms leaving people hungry and maybe impossible to recover.

Countries that suffer absolute poverty may also be affected by natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, volcanoes etc. After these, country may not have money to recover which is often the case, so they to borrow money from MEDC’s which ask for interest. The money they have borrowed could be used in the development of the country.

Also, poor countries use their fertile land ...
