Violence in the media – What is it?

Firstly lets break down the phrase ‘media violence’ to interpret what it means.

Media

‘The means of communication, such as the press the television, supplying news and information to the general public’ (The new penguin English dictionary)

Violence

‘1. exertion of physical force so as to injure of abuse, esp unnecessary or unlawful force. 2a intense or turbulent action of force. b vehement feeling or expression or an instance of such feeling or expression; fervour of forcefulness.’ (The new penguin English dictionary)

There are four types of violence

Media violence is often perceived to be damaging to young children (under age 8) because they cannot easily tell the difference between real life and fantasy. Violent images on television and in movies may seem real to young children. But our group believe that the current legislation protects the young enough and a lot of the serious violence is protected by age restriction laws and the watershed.

So basically the term Media violence is violent behaviour transmitted through the media. The types of media that can portray , influence or decide upon what types and quantity of media violence to use are:

Newspapers/Magazines: Newspapers normally show the reality of violence and in the Uk they tend to be very closely monitored by agencies and watchdogs as to what they can show also governed by the watershed. But in other countries the newspapers have been used as political tools to shape peoples opinions. This can associated with media violence.
