Another MP called Kenneth Baker also used statistical evidence to back his case on Capital Punishment. He made the point that between 1980-1985 the Homicide rate fell by 20 per cent in Georgia and Florida which both had the death penalty, while it fell by 26 per cent in New York that did not have the death penalty. The point that Kenneth is trying to make is that in the different areas of the USA the Homicide rate has fell about the same. One area had the death penalty and one didn’t and New York is one of the worst cities for this in the whole of all the States, then he said that statistics can’t prove anything, which is a very true statement.
Then a man called professor Roger Hood made this statement that 70 per cent of murders, the murderer and the victim know each other, and that 62 per cent of female victims are related to their lovers overall. These statistics effected the debate because there are three different sets of statistics, 1 is for Capital punishment, 1 is against Capital Punishment and the other is making a point that 70 per cent of murders know their victim.
Here are some quotations for and against Capital Punishment. “Man was made like god, so whoever murders a man will himself be killed by his fellow-man.” The Reformation leader Martin Luther agreed with Paul. Luther said God lends his authority to the state to punish those who do wrong. Both of these statements are for Capital Punishment.
In Singapore if you were caught with more than 15 grams of Heroin you would die. So if someone with 14.99 grams would live but someone with 15.01 would die. Is that fair? I think it is fair because they made it clear that if you had more than 15 grams of it you would die and someone with 15.01 is over the limit so they should die. You can’t make an exception because he is only .01 over, he over the limit and that is final. This statement was against Capital Punishment, but I answered the question and I thought that it was fair. Desmond Tutu, Archbishop of South Africa, opposes capital punishment. Jesus never said anything directly about the death penalty, but things he said and did seem to suggest he was against the death penalty. A deterrent is a type of a law that stops you doing things e.g., murdering or anything against the law, because you know if you get caught you will be punished for it.
This following statement is for Deterrence. People will not commit serious crimes if they know they will die for them. The death penalty would deter would-be murderers and terrorists. I think this a very effective statement because it says in two sentences what the death penalty is about all over, if you commit a crime and you are proven guilty you will be punished to death, and it sends a warning to other people who commit this crime you will die. This is a statement against the death penalty. There is no evidence whatsoever that Capital punishment is an effective deterrent, this sentence is not an opinion it is a fact. This is a very strong point about Capital punishment and this next statement is even stronger. A report was produced in 1988 for the United Nations. This showed that execution was no more effective than imprisonment. I think that people should be sentenced to death if they have done something that is unforgivable. If someone has pinched a couple of sweets from the corner shop they shouldn’t be punished for death for that most likely they would just get away with a warning from the police if they got caught, this would be easy to forgive some for, and give them a second chance. But if it is a case like for example Dr Harold Shipman or Hindly & Bradey they should be sentenced to death because it is unforgivable for what they have done, and they have caused many families pain over what they have done. The other reason these should be punished to death is that the evidence is absolutely rock solid. The idea of Capital punishment is that it will work as a deterrent so no one else will commit the same crime and also to protect society. This could also be done by imprisonment but if you ask relatives of a person who had been murdered by Shipman etc… nine times out of ten they would want the murderer to be killed. If you brought say Hindly out of prison she would probably get killed straight away because many people would probably be waiting outside to kill her if not within a couple of days I don’t think she would be alive.
Here are some more Quotations For and Against Capital Punishment. These are For CP. An eye for an eye is the only suitable punishment. Our first concern is to protect the innocent not the guilty. These are against CP. Execution is legalized murder. Even a murders life is valuable. Only God has the right to judge.
There are two sides to CP and they are that one side is For CP or against it. Different Christians will have totally different views on the matter and this is a personal view on it.
This is a subject that one day you are for it and the next you are against it. If you read lots of different evidence on it and the different cases there has been on CP, quite a lot of people I’m show would change their minds from being For it and the next minute been against it or the other way round.
I asked twelve Christians I knew about Capital Punishment and if they would bring it back. Here is a table to show my results.
My results show that more people would not bring back Capital Punishment the main reason for this is because if the person was executed and later found out they were innocent you would have killed someone who you should have not really killed. The main reason for why people wanted to bring back Capital Punishment was that the crime rate is rising in all areas all over the Country from burglaries to murders or what ever else. But then I asked them if they could flick the switch on them and every single one of them said that they could not do that. When I analyzed all the information from this table I got male and female and a wide age range rating from 14-80. I found out that the four people who said that they would bring back Capital Punishment were from the older minority.
Going back to a Bible passage about the two sons, that is about the younger of the two sons one day going up to his father and asking him for his share of the money, the father gave him the money and the son went off. Soon enough he had wasted all his money on silly things like women etc…He was sleeping rough and in the end he had to get a job and they wanted him to go and work with pigs, which was against his religion, but he had no choice left and one day he had to feed the pigs, and in the end he ended up eating with the pigs because he so poor. He soon got fed up with this and came home he didn’t know reception he would get. When he got home his father was there open arms waiting for him and he had been there since the day he had left. The son said “ I do anything” but the father said there was no need and set up a big feast went and killed the prize calf for it. The older brother was not pleased with this because the younger son had, had all his money and had come back home, while the older brother was working dead hard for his father. The father also gave the younger son a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet.
I think the message in this story and overall is that God is forgiving and he will always love you.
