An Investigation Into What Affects How Much Copper                          Is Deposited On A Pure Copper Cathode.

Plan

Aim

The aim of this investigation is to find out what effects the amount of copper deposited on a pure copper cathode. We already know that by passing an electric current through a copper sulphate solution the atoms at the anode dissolve while at the cathode positive ions are gathering and collect up.

Variables

Variables are what we can change in the experiment here are some of them:

  • We can change the amount of current passed through the electrodes.
  • We can change the strength of the solution by adding and reducing the amount.
  • We can also vary how long the experiment is left while an electric current is passed through the electrodes.

We choose to change the amount of current passed through the electrodes using a variable resistor. I choose this because it is simple and gives off good and clear results.

Predictions

A simple prediction would be to say that the mass of copper deposited at the anode would decrease, and the mass of copper deposited at the cathode would increase. It is also possible to predict when using time as a variable, that the relationship between the time the current flows and the mass of copper deposited at the cathode will be proportional. I can then predict that if I ...

Spelling, punctuation, grammar and format all to a good and clear level.

The aim of the experiment is explained well, as is the scientific basis behind the experiment. The candidate explains the variables they can vary to a good level, but they should include how they will keep certain factors constant in this section, and how. It would also be good in this section to consider potential things that may confound the experiment results and should be accounted for. The prediction is explained well but I don't think the candidate understands the concepts of the anode deposition clearly enough as they do not explain the concept of faradays law very clearly in relation to copper. The method is explained okay, but a diagram would have been good to see how the experiment should have been laid out. The conclusion is adequate based on the results obtained. The experiment evaluation was good as it considered problems that may have occurred related to a class environment, but the candidate should also consider things that may go wrong in relation to the experiment alone.

Response to the question is done well and explains a variety of scientific principles well. The candidate could have included scientific equations and a diagram to show what is happening at each electrode point to improve.
