Analysis of bond types in a series of compounds.

Qualitative Investigation

Introduction

You are provided with three simple chlorides, A, B and C of elements that are in the same period of the Periodic Table.  Your task is to carry out the reactions below, record your observations and inferences and then identify the type of bond between the element and chlorine in each of the compounds and the order of the elements in the Periodic Table

1.        Measure the pH of the distilled water supplied.  Use this for refernce in the following reactions.

pH of water = pH 5

2.        Add about 0.5g of solid A to 5 cm³ of distilled water and measure the pH of the solution.  Save the solution for further tests.

3.        This reaction should be carried out in a fume cupboard.

Add about 0.25g of solid B to 5 cm³ of the distilled water with great care.  Measure the pH of the solution and save the solution for test 4.

4.        To half the solution from 3 add sodium hydroxide dropwise till excess.

5.        Add about 0.5g of solid C to 5 cm³ of distilled water and measure the pH of the solution.  Save the solution for test 6.

6.        Add sodium hydroxide dropwise to the solution from 5 until in excess

7.        Heat about 0.5g of solid A in a dry ignition tube.
