The trachea then divides into two smaller tubes called bronchi, which also have 'C' shaped rings of cartilage. These carry air into each lung. It is the diaphragm that controls the breathing process. It is a sheet of muscle that separates the thorax from the abdomen. While breathing in, the lungs increase in size and move upwards, when we breathe out the lungs move down and decrease in size. To prevent damage to the lung is the pleural membrane, which is filled with a thin layer of lubricating fluid so that movement is lubricated.
