Introduction

Rate of Reaction Coursework Aim In this experiment I will be investigating the effects of temperature on the rate of reaction between Hydrochloric Acid and Magnesium. I will measure this reaction by seeing how long a piece of magnesium ribbon takes to completely dissolve in different temperatures of hydrochloric acid. Background All substances are made up of particles. The particles might be atoms, molecules or ions. Before we can get a chemical reaction particles must collide together. This is called the collision theory. The more collisions there are between the particles in a given time, the faster the reaction. The changing factors in this are Temperature, concentration, Pressure, Surface Area, and Catalysts. Prediction My prediction is that the higher the temperature of the Hydrochloric Acid is the faster the rate of the reaction is. When the temperature of the Hydrochloric Acid is at 25.C the reaction is going to be fairly slow but when the temperature is raised to 50.C the reaction is going to be extremely fast so the graph will look something like this. Safety Safety is paramount in any experiment especially in one where corrosive acid is involved. Goggles will be the number one tool in this experiment, these are very important as the acid can spit when being heated and if the acid goes into someone's eye it can result in severe eye damage. Conclusion

If I could repeat this experiment again I would make sure that this time I have a wider range of results to get the best possible and reliable outcome. I would definitely repeat the experiment at higher and lower temperatures than the ones I already did to see how the rate of the reaction would be affected at extremely high and low temperatures. Despite the few minor mistakes that occurred during the experiment, the results of the actual investigation are very reliable and fairly accurate which can even be used for further research. I would consider having some different variables like: instead of changing the temperature, I would consider changing the size of the magnesium ribbon or keep the same weight but actually change its surface area. It will be very interesting to see how surface area affects the rate of the reaction. From general knowledge we could say that the higher the surface area the higher the rate of the reaction as more solid particles are exposed to the solute so more collisions occur. This could actually be our prediction and to prove whether or not its true we could repeat the same experiment again but just change the surface area of the magnesium piece. ...read more.

    The reaction seems to have gone almost at a steady pace throughout the experiment. As the amount of molecules of hydrochloric acid decreases the longer it takes for the magnesium strip to have fully reacted. For the eighty seconds that we measured there seems to be a uniform increase in the volume of hydrogen produced.
