Reaction times of
Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric acid
Introduction
I am going to perform an experiment involving sodium thiosulphate and hydrochloric acid. The experiment is to see how fast the two of them will react. The reaction which will be taking place is this:
Sodium Thiosulphate + Hydrochloric Acid = sodium chloride + water + sulphur dioxide + sulphur Na2 S2 O3 (aq) + 2H Cl (aq) = 2Na Cl (aq) + H2 O (l) + S O2 (g) + S
I am going to do this by placing a piece of paper underneath the conical flask with a cross drawn on to it with permanent marker and by using a stopwatch seeing how long it will take for the cross to disappear. The cross disappears because as the sodium chloride is produced it dissolves into the water making it go cloudy.
