I worked in three main areas
- Technicians
- Engineers
- Micro Lab
The technicians mainly concentrated on two areas, the C.H.P and the RO plant. These main areas were important for the running and well being of the plant. The C.H.P which stands for combined heat and power turns the excess heat from the plant into electricity which can either be stored to run the plant or be sold on to the electricity companies. R.O stands for Reverse Osmosis. Reverse Osmosis takes all of the minerals out of the water; this means the brewery can put what ever minerals they want back into the water.
On the engineering side of the work they concentrated on how everything works in the plant If a motor failed the engineers fix it. They also worked with effluent this is waste water. This is then piped down to an off-site facility were it is turned into methane.
In the micro lab they mainly work with the fermentation of the beer they make sure that the right things were inside the beer. They also culture the yeast.
Environment
The environment I worked in was split. The technicians and engineering side of the job was messy but the micro Lab and the rest of the plant was very clean as it was part of the food branch just the same as Burtons Biscuits is. Both sides of work were very noisy as there is always large mechanical equipment working also some of the work was very smelly. The effluent smelt very bad where as the brewing and packing sides of the job smelt very much of the beer. The rest facilities were very good there was a rest room for every section of the brewery and we also had a café were you could go and buy food.
Work
The first job I really had to do on my own was control a hand Crane I had to lift a large crate up to a higher level and this was fairly easy to do. I mainly walked around and watched what the men had to do but from time to time helped out. I also had to help install a large pump that had been reconditioned I had help from the three men I was with and we got the job done quite quickly. This also wasn’t too difficult to do
(Pump I worked On)
Colleagues
The employees at Inbev brewery treated me like I was an employee there they gave me jobs to do and let me help with the work that they did. The management structure was simple you had your team leaders who had a team of three or four, and then there was a facility manger he oversees certain areas such as waste water, beer making and packing. Also there is an over all manger who oversees all aspects of the plant.
Summary
I think that the Brewery was an excellent opportunity to see how work is on the outside world is I would defiantly recommend it for others to try and I feel that there is no need to change anything.
