Aim: To determine which of a range of exercises makes a boy (15 years old) and girl (15 years old)'s heart beat increase and to find out why. The exercises to be researched are resting, stretching, continuous sit-ups, normal jogging, skipping and jumping consistently on the spot. Equipment: * * A digital stopwatch. * A wall bar or radiator * At least one other person (of the sex). * A skipping rope. * A large area for jogging. Planning: Hypothesis: I think that the less active exercises like lying down will not make the heart go as fast as more active exercises, for example skipping. This is because; the muscles need less carbon dioxide, as less respiration is required. There may be a difference in heart rate between girls and boys. However, it is not likely that any such difference will have significant an effect as differences in fitness. Fair test: To ensure that the practical is a fair test, we must do a number of things: * Always ensure that the exercises are carried out for the duration of 2 minutes and that a rest period is taken (for 2 minutes) afterwards. Further exercise should then be carried out for 2 minutes and then so on. * Ensure timing is accurate. * Ensure the person observed is breathing correctly and constantly throughout the exercises to prevent the build up of lactic acid. * Make sure the person does not bounce while stretching into side splitz to prevent the build up of lactic acid. ...read more.


However, you move more so more oxygen needs to get to your muscles to enable them to contract. When lying down, Michaels heart rate was 78 beats per minute while Natalie's was 80 beats per minute. This may suggest that he is slightly fitter than Natalie. However, during side splits (the stretch), Natalie's heart rate seems to have decreased compared to Michaels. My heart rate was 108 beats per minute while Natalie's was 102 beats per minute. This is an anomalous result because in the other exercises, Michaels heart rate is slower than hers. This is likely to be a human error, meaning that our measurements were not precise enough it was also not a large difference. It seems more likely that Natalie is more accustomed to the exercise than Michael. Being a dancer, she may have developed leg muscles so her muscles have to work less hard to do the same exercise, especially in one she is accustomed to. Therefore Michaels body needed to adapt itself to a fairly new and more oxygen-requiring position. That would indicate that his body is not used to the position of side splits and that it is fairly strenuous on the muscles. The muscles would then need extra oxygen to help them cope, in the situation. For the sit-ups, it is clear that the results are very close. For example the continuous sit-ups may not have been carried out at a constant rate as the subjects only managed a certain amount, some repetitions slower or faster than others. Therefore the results may not be accurate, as this variable was not taken into account. It is difficult to measure and ensure that the muscles are working at the same rate throughout the exercises. During the resting period of two minutes, the heart rate may not have regained its initial rate and so the experiment would be unfair. This could not be resolved during the experiment sue to the fact that there was little time allocated for the experiment. In a future experiment, i would increase the designated resting and exercise time. The subjects being monitored, should not have walked around and set up equipment for the next activity as this is exercise in itself. If there are other people in the group, they should do the setting up. However, if there is no one available, this factor should be considered when analysing and interpreting results. Ultimately, there should be a repetition of the experiment to eliminate anomalies and confirm the patterns and trends shown in this original set of data. The entire investigation should be carried out again. This is because although the results may not be entirely accurate on this attempt, more closely studied and scientifically monitored attempts should be made. However, due to the lack of scientific equipment, the experiment could not be entirely accurate.
