What are the best conditions for the germination of seeds?
Aim
I am going to control the temperature surrounding the test tube in order to see how this factor affects the germination of seeds. In order to achieve this, all the other factors, light, oxygen content, and water would be kept at a constant level.
Control
The variable is therefore the temperature, so therefore I would use water baths, the freezer, and room temperature to control this factor. (Refer to figure 1.)
Prediction
I think a “warm temperature” would be the best condition for the germination of seeds. A warm temperature would be around room temperature. Low temperatures would stop the activities of the cells responsible for this process. Vice versa, high temperatures would stop the process too as the cells are denatured.
Apparatus
The equipment needed for this experiment is:
- Water baths (3) (45 degrees, 50 degrees and 55 degrees)
- Freezer (1)
- Test tube racks (5)
- Test tubes (5)
- Cotton wool (1 roll)
- Seeds (70) (14 seeds in each test tube)
A constant number of seeds are used in order to calculate a percentage of germination in each test tube.
Figure 1
Each water baths contains a test tube rack, which has test tubes carrying 14 seeds.
