Introduction

How do the holiday brochures "Club 18-30" and "Thomas Cook's Forever Young" reflect important social and cultural features of British society? According to the Oxford English dictionary, the word 'holiday' is defined as "an extended period of recreation especially spent away from home; break from work or school." In today's society though, the word 'holiday' can mean anything from a simple day off work or school to a round the world exploration. A generation ago, people were content with family holidays by the seaside in resorts such as Blackpool or Brighton. Today's generation however, seem more satisfied with holidays abroad where sun, sea, sand and sex are readily available. Although the term 'class' is one of the most frequently used concepts in sociology, there is no clear agreement about how the notion should best be defined. For Marx a class was a group of people standing in a common relationship to the means of production. Weber also saw class as an economic category but stressed its interaction with social status and the affinities of 'party'. In recent times, some social scientists have used occupation extensively as an indicator of social class, others have stressed ownership of property and other wealth; still others are looking to lifestyle choices. ...read more.

Middle

The "Club 18-30" brochure has a heavier paperweight than that of the "Forever Young" brochure. This could also suggest that the "Forever Young" brochure is more delicate than the "Club 18-30" brochure. Both brochures have glossy pages; this indicates that both have the same objective, which is to sell the reader a holiday. Inside the "Club 18-30" brochure there are two types of photos. One is of smiling people who are portrayed as having a great time, and the second is of the accommodation. The majority of the photos of the accommodation also contain smiling people. This would indicate that the accommodation's atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The fact that there is no pictures of the resort, would indicate that either the people going on a holiday such as this would not wish to sight see, or that there would be plenty of entertainment provided for them and therefore would not have enough available time to visit the surrounding areas of the resort. Another item that draws your attention is the fact that many of the photos inside the "Club 18-30" brochure are very suggestive. Conclusion

Such resources include the skills and credentials, or qualifications, which affect the types of job people, are able to obtain. Based on the above theory by Weber, it seems quite clear to me that the "Forever Young" brochure is aimed at the middle class and the "Club 18-30" brochure is aimed at the working class. Clearly there is the aspect of money. The prices in the "Forever Young" brochure are very expensive. This to me suggests that it is aimed at the middle class. The reason for that is mature working class people would not be able to afford such a price on a state pension alone, they may need help from a company pension, which only many of the middle class receive. The prices in the "Club 18-30" brochure are very inexpensive, therefore could possibly be aimed at the working class who would be able to afford such prices. Despite this, the price could be low because of the age range. Many people 18-30 years old either are students, or have just completed their course, hence may have debts to pay off and cannot afford expensive holidays. According to Weber this would mean that the people going on the "Forever Young" holidays would have to be better educated. This is clearly suggested in both brochures. ...read more.
