HYPOTHESIS

Many women today have faced inequality in their role as a married woman. The traditional role of the expressive role by women and untraditional instrumental role taken on by man is seen as the norm in many households. But this has varied amongst many cultures, but the traditional female role still remains in the ethnic minority. My aim is to investigate whether there has been a change in attitude to a woman’s role within the family, between younger and older Asian women. The formation of new norms and values has been influenced possibly by mainstream education with its emphasis on careers and achieving to full potential.

CONTEXT AND CONCEPTS

A context for this topic is Bhatti’s findings about the Asian family life. She found that the ‘ izzat ’ i.e. family honor was taken very seriously, with particular emphasis placed on behavior of daughters. Bhatti found that mothers saw their role as being of paramount importance. This clearly indicates the traditional view of the ‘expressive role’, which is seen and accepted normal amongst Asian elder women of the first generation. The effect of ‘izzat’ may have forced the women to completely accept it. This meant that the men were left to provide for their families as they too saw themselves as heads of the households.

Statistics have shown that females, with great emphasis on those of ethnic minority, are increasingly engaged in managerial and professional jobs. This means that generations born in the range 1940-59 had only 25% of Indian women working. But 20 years later the second generation, there had been a rise in 13%. These findings point out that women in this century are no longer sticking to cultural roles and are adjusting to the norms of society. Education had been a reason, it is the institution where they are taught that building careers and getting into jobs is rewarding and it’s not only for men.

An important concept, which binds with my investigation, is cultural drift- this is when society changes over a period of time because of influence of other cultures. It is believed that this will lead society towards a new direction an example being westernized. This change will affect the ethnic minority as Asian women born into the second generation are greatly influenced of those around them. This in turn would lead Asian women into a new cult and therefore change they attitude in their role.

Another concept is the idea of cultural accumulation- this is the process whereby new cultural ...
