Whilst it was always my intention to study medicine and qualify as a doctor, when I left school I decided to study Physiology because of my interest in science and to establish a foundation on which to build my medical career, possibly with a view to working in research.   I developed this further through my Pharmacology degree, that broadened my knowledge further and provided the opportunity to work in medical research.   I spent two years investigating the role of oxidant stress in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and presented findings at a seminars including those held abroad.   My research involved mainly animal experimentation but over the past 12 months, I have had my

first opportunity to work in a clinical environment helping to investigate and treat patients in a number of hospitals, whilst on placement for my Clinical Physiology degree. I undertook this because of my desire to work with and help sick people and what I’ve particularly enjoyed is the contact with the MD environment composed of hospital technical staff, pharmacists, therapists, nurses, and doctors working together to care for patients suffering from a wide range of conditions.
