As a person, student and employee I encounter several circumstances each day which test my patience, my character and my values. For me, my values are important

Values change as the world changes, just like people. There are some  values that have been important since civilizations began such as, honesty, integrity, patience, and unity. These values are just important today as they were 100 years ago, even 1000 years ago! Even though values are important, most people in my generation haven’t developed proper values yet. On the contrary, there are people in my generation such as myself who do have values that lead them in their life. I believe that some of my values include: honesty, integrity, patience, love, vision, gratitude, appreciation, caring, commitment, and what I think is the most important value of all, respect. Because if you have respect for yourself, your elders, and your peers, you will be honest, you will have integrity, and you will be patient. That value is what I think my generation is missing. In past generations most people had respect for their elders and themselves because if they didn’t, they would get in big trouble. Values have always been important and for the most part our generations values are the same just less people have them now.

Your values can determine how and where you apply your skills in a career. For example, you may be good with people, but your values are likely to determine whether you use that skill in sales or in counselling. We use values to assign positive and negative properties to different careers, companies, corporate cultures and lifestyles, and make decisions on that basis. Within the same profession (accountancy, law, management) there will always be a variety of companies with different corporate aims, working environments, attitudes to their employees and potential for progression. As a result, people increasingly investigate the impact of the particular role that they might play within a profession, and a company's overall aims and day to day working atmosphere. Equally, companies are usually interested in candidates who have researched their values and can show that they identify with them. This is a good way for employers to differentiate between applicants who have similar capabilities and to single out those who are likely to enjoy working for them. Having firm values can prove beneficent to your career.

With firm values, you can accomplish more in life, and in your career. If you know your values you can make decisions regarding anything and by adhering to your values you can handle situations and become successful. We get our values from our parents, religion, and society. I think that because most people from my generation get their values from our society and the media which is disrespectful and unruly. In past generations the media’s influence was light compared to it’s strong influence now. As you hold firm values that coincide with your company’s you can succeed and rise to the top, no matter what career you choose. Understanding your values will improve nearly everything about who you are, what you do, and how you do it.
