"In drama there are more interesting roles for men than for women." Discuss to what extent you agree with this statement and what it is that makes a role interesting.

In the play Macbeth written by Heinemann Shakespeare, has many interesting male and female characters. However, I do not agree with the statement that there are more interesting roles for men than for women. I personally think that in the play Macbeth, the roles for women are more interesting than the roles for men because, the roles Lady Macbeth who is Macbeth's wife and the three witches who Macbeth and Banquo encounter when they cross a moor, are way for fascinating characters than the male roles in the play. They are very powerful characters who make a great impact on Macbeth, leading him to his actions.

The women roles, such as Lady Macbeth and the three witches are more interesting than the male roles in the play Macbeth, because of many reason. Lady Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's most fascinating and frightening female character. She is a very interesting because she is very manipulative and evil. Lady Macbeth is one of the main reasons for Macbeth's actions causing him to eventually get murdered and beheaded by Macduff. Once she hears about the three witches' prophecies, she was not uncertain about it like her husband was when the witches told him, she immediately desired Macbeth to be the king so that she can be the queen, which shows how wicked she is. Therefore, she persuaded Macbeth to kill Duncan, if she didn't persuade him he might have not killed Duncan which means he might have not got murdered by Macduff. When she tried to persuade Macbeth to kill Duncan and he hesitated she questioned his manhood. In Act 1 she said ” When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would
Be so much more the man." Which shows that she knew this will make him want to prove his manhood by committing the murder, this was how she eventually managed to manipulate Macbeth to commit the murder.

Another reason is how Lady Macbeth had great power over her husband. She had the desire for Macbeth to become the king so that she can be the queen, because during the time when this play was written, women did not have any power. Especially over their husbands nor were they allowed to express their opinions. So when Lady Macbeth becomes the queen she will have more power than any other women does.  However, the fact that she has the power to control her own husband during the time this play was written makes Lady Macbeth very fascinating and powerful.
