Blanca’s relationship with Pedro Tercero symbolizes breakdown of socialist party. As we know, Blanca is fall in love with Pedro Tercero. He is the socialist leader and the opposite political stands of Esteban. The part where Blanca hides Pedro from her father Esteban, it shows the relationship between father and daughter as well as the relationship between two different parties were fragile. That means the family relationship break down and it causes the fragile party relationship. This kind of father and daughter’s relationship forms a tense in the family and this results a strong opposition between the daughter and the head of family. Her relationship turns into the battle of the political parties. Also, this fact forms an entire mood of the chapter.
The fox and hens are symbolic of battle of two different parties, socialism and conservatism. The weak party gathers to defend themselves from the powerful one who takes advantage from weak people such as Esteban. One the other hand, the fox is the party that always wins and the hens would be the rest parties. “…in the end, the fox always eats the hens” supports Clara’s warning for the future that the party that always wins will continue to win and this introduced Pedro Garcia. The struggle between two parties is the major event that occurs throughout entire book and small happenings were occurred around the battle. By using symbols of completely different styles of animals to represent the relationship of two completely opposite parties give readers clear image of battles of parties.
The big house on the corner is symbolic of links or relationship of masculinity and femininity. The house was divided into two parts, masculine and feminine lands. Esteban dominates the front section of house and wife rules the back rooms. Though the big house was ruled by Esteban, Clara begins to work her magical power on its inside. This explains the links of two genders. Male encounters every problems of party but behind them female controls the whole mind of male. Also, this concept gave one of the themes, the women power that supports the Clairvoyance and social mood. Without the feminine presence that works against Esteban’s violence, the link of masculinity and femininity lose its balance.
Education symbolizes the power of characters especially the female characters. The characters in this novel display various attitudes about the education. For example, humiliation that Esteban experiences while attending school not only revels excessive pride but also the strong mind that he will never feel humiliated again. This became the power and the ambition which controls everything in the society. Alba, able to read newspaper at age 6, had special education such as Clara’s spiritual education helps Alba to have power to protect her and be dignified. The education results creation of power of female character and it affects the plot of novel and supports the theme of women power.
