Memory

Memory is a fascinating and complex area of study in cognitive psychology. Cognitive psychologists view the human brain like a computer system and explore the internal mental processes involved when a person is presented with some form of stimuli (input) and the response they have to this stimuli (output). Memory is such an important focus of research because it forms the core of all cognitive processes, as information needs to be stored and accessed effectively for any other cognitive functions to work.

Memory is a hypothetical concept (it cannot be seen) and thus psychologists often use models to represent how memory works, including how each component of the memory model works individually. A huge body of research has been conducted since the 1950s that has investigated the validity of these models and scientifically tested the capacities of each component.

This area of cognitive psychology also attracts a lot of research support because it has many practical applications. For example, the findings of numerous research studies have been crucial in training police to use appropriate questioning techniques for eye-witness testimony, as well as providing useful guidance on how strategies can be used to improve our memories of certain events or material.
