Operations Management

Operations management is concerned with how a business organises itself so that it can physically deliver the product it offers. It is concerned with the business trying to be as efficient as possible in converting its inputs, which are things such as raw materials, components and labour into its final product- the good(s) or service(s) that it sells. A business may not describe itself as having an operations function, but every business that is concerned with the management of the systems it has for the creation of its product (design, purchasing, production, and distribution) will need to be involved in operations management.

Operations management can therefore be concerned with things like the production process, the location and design of factories, the purchase of supplies, the choice and purchase of capital equipment, the supply chain to the customer and the maintenance of quality.
