Introduction

Jennifer Shaw Criminology- SOC 210 Prof. Hallowell April 25, 2006 The name "serial killer" is given a murderer who kills a number of people over a period of time, especially somebody who uses the same method each time. Most of the time, the murderer actually has relations with the victim prior to the murder. Most agree that a serial killer murders victims at a different time and a different place with a "cooling off" period. In between their crimes, they appear to be quite normal, a state which Hervey Cleckley and Robert Hare call the "mask of sanity." There is frequently - but not always - a sexual element to the murders.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_killer#Defining_serial_murder) Most serial killers tend to be male. But throughout time females have stepped up to serial killing. Some well known female serial killers include Aileen Wuornos, Myra Hindley, Cynthia Marciniak, and Erzsbet Bthory. Then they seek out the victim and murder them. http://members.tripod.com/~SerialKillr/SerialKillersExposed/characteristics.html The types of victims that serial killers choose are those that are weaker than themselves. Some serial killers will fit a particular stereotype which has a certain meaning for the killer. For example, in the past Ted Bundy ruthlessly murdered women in their early twenties with long brown hair. This "type" resembled his high-class fiance that broke off their engagement. David Berkowitz, "Son of Sam", wasn't so precise with his victims. He hated all women, and blamed them for everything. Berkowitz felt strongly that every horrible situation that occurred in the world somehow traced back to a woman. Another serial killer Gacy brutally strangled young boys, some of who he worked with, and called them names like "little queers" and "punks". Some feel that his serial killing spree was a result of the way his father treated him. His own controlling father would say he was "worthless" "queer" and a "punk." ...read more.

Conclusion

3. Thrill-Oriented Type This type is in it for the fun. This killer gets a high from killing. He is very sadistic and kills for excitement. 4. Lust Killer This type is a sexual killer, and kills for the pure turn-on. The amount of pleasure the killer derives depends on how much they torture their victim. The more heinous the torture, the more aroused they become. This type is in touch with reality. http://members.tripod.com/~SerialKillr/SerialKillersExposed/types.html Most of us who are rightfully sane have the power within us to somewhat control our emotions and actions. No matter how horrendus the situation might be, our conscience holds us back from letting the anger out on an individual. Do serial killers lack the common sense of what is morally correct? Are they dominated by something that we will never understand? Or maybe they are confused between the feelings of pleasure and pain. Whatever the case may be, serial killers are not at a peak of extinction, and we need to find the correct remedy to put an end to it. ...read more.
