There is an mental illness that affects one percent of the worlds population, there are 17million sufferers worldwide but this mental illness is still the most misunderstood. Schizophrenia, a severe group of psychotic disorders, leaving the individual with the inability to function. Research indicates there are many factors that will induce schizophrenia. This essay highlights and discusses the three main factors that have been linked to the causes of schizophrenia. The first theory strongly links  ‘Biological Factors’ including brain abnormalities, brain structure and high levels of dopamine with schizophrenia. The second theory shows evidence of ‘Genetic Relations’ and hereditary predispositions in the development of schizophrenia. Finally, the essay will examine the ‘Environmental Perspective’; the significance of unstable environments and stressful situations in relation to the causes of schizophrenia.

Evidence and research conducted on ‘Biological Perspective’ considers and evaluates the differences between brain structure and brain biochemistry of a normal person and that of a schizophrenic. Two areas of structural differences have been found in the brain of a schizophrenic person. The first compares the size and activity of the prefrontal cortex, a schizophrenic will have less activity and be of smaller size. The pre-frontal cortex connects with the limbic system- the area of the brain responsible for the regulation of emotion- with such reductions of the pre-frontal cortex, the ability to carry out interactions will be naturally affected and limited. Characteristics portrayed by schizophrenics. (See page 553). Additionally, schizophrenics have oversized ventricles (fluid filled spaces in the brain) s p 553. This leads to a deterioration of surrounding brain tissue, thus increasing the level of severity of schizophrenia. Computer Axial Tomography (CAT) and Magnetic Resonance Imagery (MRI) are the studies used to confirm such theories. Images from such studies show ventricles that are distinctly larger from that of a nonschizophrenic. The study also confirmed the contrast between schizophrenics and their identical twins and siblings who do not suffer from the illness.

Researchers have strong evidence relating the importance of excess levels of dopamine in the brain. The first of two sources is the use of  ‘antipsychotic drugs’. This type of treatment reduces levels of dopamine in the brain, by ‘blocking the dopamine receptors’ thus highly effective at reducing schizophrenic symptoms. (c handout) Additional evidence to support the dopamine theory comes from observation of amphetamine abuse. This particular drug releases dopamine, causing the user to have similar behavioural pattern of a schizophrenic. Thus, supporting levels of dopamine in the brain can have a significant affect on schizophrenic tendencies. Studies are also ...
