1.5 Mission Statement and Core Values
According to Business Organisation and Management for Queensland (Mylonas 2007, p.13) “a mission statement attempts to capture (in simpler terms) what the business does and how the business works. It gives a clear sense of purpose and may be accompanied by a list of the business’s values or these values may be implied in the statement.”
Fisher & Paykel’s mission statement is simple and effective. It outlines their primary activities and states their values and goals. The organisation’s mission statement is as follows: Fisher & Paykel Appliances designs, manufactures and markets a range of innovative household appliances developed with a commitment to technology, design, user friendliness and environmental awareness.
Fisher & Paykel are dedicated to staying true to their values of style, integrity, care and innovation. Style is about the way their products are designed, and the way in which they evolve in response to change. Integrity is about building relationships with customers, the way they conduct their business and the trust behind their reputation. Care reflects the way they look after all with whom they come into contact, the way their employees go about their roles and the way they respect the environment. Innovation is the ‘heart’ of the organisation – they are innovative in all that they do. This applies to everything from the initial ideas to the detail of their product.
Fisher & Paykel’s vision is to have an ongoing commitment to research and development, an environment that allows their people to develop innovative ideas and a Board of Directors that gives the ides the potential to achieve their long term goals.
The mission statement, values and goals of this organisation are all clear for people to see and assist the company to achieve a high reputation within the community.
1.6 Corporate Culture and Values
Corporate culture describes the shared values and beliefs of the people in an organisation. A culture guides the activities of the members of the organisation, and it is their idea of what is important and how things work.

The organisation has in place policies to ensure that the treatment of their employees is fair and ethical.
1.7 Stakeholders
A stakeholder is a person or organisation that has an interest in the workings of a business.
-
Internal Stakeholders are stakeholders that are either directly affected by the business or have a direct effect on the business. These include: employees, consumers, owners/shareholders, managers and suppliers.
-
External Stakeholders are stakeholders that indirectly affect the business or are indirectly affected by the business. These include: the environment, the government, the local community, economic conditions and technology.
Employees of Fisher & Paykel are both affected by and have an effect on the company. Staff affect the company’s organisational performance, and its profitability. They are affected by the business in that the work environment, job opportunities and security are all dependent on the viability of the business.
Consumers of the company are affected by the quality of the goods and services provided to them. The consumers affect the business in that they influence the business to deliver products of acceptable quality and affordable price.
Owners and shareholders have a stake in the business as it is their property. They receive the profits of the company, or suffer from its losses, which makes it clear that they have a sizeable interest in the company’s success.
Managers are employed by Fisher & Paykel to direct the business. Although they do not receive a share of the profits, they are paid a salary for their work and may receive bonuses or packages if the performance of the business is high.
Suppliers for Fisher & Paykel provide the company with the materials they need to manufacture their appliances. The suppliers depend on the success of the company and reliable payments from then, and therefore have a stake in the organisation.
The environment is affected by businesses in that it suffers if the company produces goods that are harmful to the environment, if the production methods create large amounts of pollution, or if the product is unable to be recycled. The environment relies on organisations to be environmentally friendly as often as possible.
The government, especially the Federal Government, has the highest stakes in the business because of their impact on economic conditions and the development of laws and regulations. The government also relies on the business to create jobs for people in order to have a successful business, which generates wealth and contributes to the government’s taxation revenue.
1.8 Social Responsibility
Fisher & Paykel’s social responsibility is seen through the organisation’s commitment to preserving the environment. The company’s commitment to recycling began in 1993 with an informal recycling tidy-up, which eventually grew to become the efficient operation that it is today. Most products manufactured by Fisher & Paykel are successfully recycled at their Auckland recycling centre.
When products are designed, they are designed for disassembly. This assists with recycling once the product is no longer useful. The materials used in the manufacturing of appliances are selected carefully to ensure that the least impact possible is placed on the environment. Manufacturing technologies, packaging systems and production methods are all as environmentally friendly as possible. The use of potentially harmful and hazardous substances has been eliminated, such as the use of CFC’s in refrigeration systems and insulation foam.
At Fisher & Paykel, products are designed to be energy efficient. Many new products have been designed to save energy and water, and ultimately, money.
Conclusion
Fisher & Paykel has been designing, manufacturing and marketing appliances successfully for over 70 years. The company has a devoted to staying true to their values and goals, and is socially responsible in having a strong commitment to the preservation of the environment. Fisher & Paykel is a leader in household appliances and the company’s positive behaviours will assist in keeping it a highly respected company all over the world.
