How has a technological development impacted our life?

Robot as one of the technological developments impacts our life greatly. Robots are originated from the term 'robot' which was invented by Czech playwright Karel Capek (1890-1938) in 1921.1 Its definition is machines that can do multiple tasks.2 Actually, true robots are machines that can move about and do different tasks without human help.3 Robots and True robots have been imaginary figures since the 20th century, but products in the 21st century. Although many robots were invented in the past five years, none of them are true robots but named as 'artificial intelligence'. Robots are created for different purposes, but most of the robots are made to help us increase our area of exploration, advance in industrial production, and allow us to perform tasks with high precision.

One of the ways robots benefit our life is increasing our area of exploration. One type of robots that help increase our area of exploration is the remote control robots. Remote-control robots are in any shapes, any mechanical structure depending on the purpose of creation. Remote-control robots are often used to explore places where humans cannot reach.4 When an earthquake occurs, it is faster to send in a recently developed robot Souryu which is rubber snake like robot to search for survivors than scrambling for the victims of the disaster by humans.5 When usual geological movements are detected, Date 2, which is a huge robotic spider, will be launched to go to the disastrous places that humans cannot go. Scientists can notify the problem through the view of the robot instead of sending in an expedition team. For military purposes, robot planes such as global hawk which provide the newest images of the battlefield and sky exploration to reveal the unknown area.6 Other robots such as underwater robots are able to allow us to observe accurately in difficult situations for long period of time, retrieve artifacts, reveal the unknown and explore the deep sea.7 As the population of the world increases, more residential space is needed. There will soon be insufficient places for people to live in and so space exploration robots such as Spirit, Opportunity and other future exploration gadgets have to explore other habitable places for people to live in. Without these exploration robots, many disasters cannot be prevented and more problems will show up simultaneously.

Another way robots benefit our life is industrial production. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution in the 18th century, many workers were employed to produce products. In 1961, a robot named Unimate changed everything in the industrial world.8 Unimate was a robot hand invented by Joe Engelberger and George Devol that could do things in higher accuracy and fewer mistakes than humans.9 Since Unimate became common many years after its creation, it soon replaced workers in big factories. Unimate is one of the first industrial robots that had ever been invented.10 The reason Unimate replaces workers in ...
