I have been employed by the Sunderland City Council as a consultant to write and present a report outlining the pros and cons facing the redevelopment of Sunderland as a conference destination

Sunderland is a British seaside city which has a long history; it is also an important port city on the northeast of England. It nearby Newcastle and had population of 280,807 at the time of the 2001 census. (Wikipedia, 2010)

Conferences are usually general sessions and face-to face groups with a high participation, primarily concerned with planning, obtaining facts and information, or solving organizational and operational problems. (Martin, 1996)  Convention centers are important to attract the larger conventions and the high spending delegates to a destination. SO choosing a good conference location is one the most important decision for a planner. There are some factors such like meeting rooms, hotel service quality and hotel room availability, clean/attractive location, safety, transportation, food, city image, the cost and scenery are the planners’ decision attributes. For example the quality of service, the facilities of meeting room, the facilities of sleeping room and the location are regarded as the most decisive five factors.

As a conference destination, it is obvious to see the advantages of conditions of Sunderland. The rise of conference centers as venues is linked to the explosive growth of the association market.

According to the introduction of Sunderland background above, Sunderland have advantageous natural conditions. It approaches the north coast of England and is very pleasant in summer. The comfort of season in the conference destination is also a necessary factor for customers’ choice. Because no one may choose have a meeting under an extreme cold or extreme hot environment.  The transportation form Newcastle airport to Sunderland is very convenient, it only takes 45 minutes by metro, and driving is quicker. Why is an advantageous condition? Because the customers who are far away form Sunderland must take airplanes.

You can find plenty of conference venues in Sunderland, like Tavistock Roker hotel, Wear side Golf Club, National Glass Centre Sunderland, Sunderland Museum and Winter Garden and Marriott hotel. Whether in urban area, suburbs, the airport or tourist attractions, most conference organizer will consider to select choose are hotels. Because the hotels have the high level of environment, guest room, dining and service. I take the Tavistock Roker Hotel make an example. It has a grand room in which have a maximum capacity of 350 people. It can be transformed into banquet, theatre, classroom and boardroom. The hotels also have 54 bedrooms which can be supplied for the conference participants. Of course that like these star-rated hotels must provide high-quality service and tasty food. (latemeeting.com, 2010) The central location and accessibility to good hotels and transportation for domestic delegates is indispensable facilities.

With the purpose of be able to make use of their accessibility, it is obvious that the venues also need to offer the full capacity required by meeting organizers and delegates.

The conference destination with easy access to entertainment, restaurants, bars and shopping are the betters. In a normal cognition, the location is everything, if there are hotels can walk distance to conference, it also will be a plus. Close to major shopping and entertainment districts is also one indispensable facilities.

The beaches and Seaburn are the notable attractions for tourists to Sunderland. And the National Glass Centre established ...
