Marketing Mix of Nokia N81 8GB

Why it reaches the Young Demographic?

The product that I have chosen for my assignment is the latest Nokia N81 8 GB.

The Nokia N81 mobile phone is much more than just a mobile phone: it is an essential communications device. The N95 from Nokia has a range of features that are becoming more essential in our busy and increasingly mobile lives. Ideal for personal or business.

The Nokia N95 offers many of the qualities expected from a mobile phone today but it is the extra features that make the Nokia N95 stand out from the crowd. The N95 comes with mobile internet so you can check your emails on the move. The phone also has 8 gigabytes of memory so you can store pictures and music easily.

The camera on the Nokia N95 is 5 mega pixels and has a lens from Carl Zeiss optics allowing you to take great pictures and video footage from your phone.

The 8Gb memory on the Nokia N95 makes this the ideal music phone with enough storage space for 6000 music tracks you can fit all your favourite music on the phone

The Nokia N81 tri-band phone operates in three networks - EGSM 900 and GSM 1800/1900 - providing coverage on five continents.

Target Market: Teenagers/Young Adults (16 – 27yrs) Students Product: Anatomy: Core – Mobile Phone Actual – Nokia 7210 Augment – FM Radio, WAP, Games Classification: Speciality/Shopping Range: Nokia N81 (enhancement/updated version of N95 ) Networks (i.e. Orange, O2, T-mobile, Vodaphone) Brand: Nokia, Connecting People Nokia N81, "A sign of Attitude" Product Life Cycle: early Growth/ late introduction Price: £299.95 - £279.00 (Argos, Carphone warehouse, Index) A Description Of the Criteria Used by the Company to Target the Selected Market The company Nokia have promoted the Nokia N81 in a certain way to target the selected market. I will be looking at this in a bit more detail: - Age The age that Nokia has targeted for the selected target market is teenagers and young adults. The way the phone has been designed confirms this. The design of the Nokia N81 and the way this targets the selected market is explained below.

The Design The new Nokia N81 has been designed so that it appeals to younger people mainly teenagers and young adults as it can be seen from the picture. It is small, colourful and trendy looking. Which what a lot of young people want in a mobile. It has a light blue front cover and a blue LCD screen.

This mobile also comes equipped with Nokia's N-Gage gaming platform and some nifty gaming controls. The idea is that some games run in widescreen format, and controls on both short edges of the screen become illuminated for use with left and right thumbs when you are playing. The screen is excellent. It measures 2.4 inches corner-to-corner, offers 320 x 240 pixels, and is sharp, clear and bright. We aren't hardened mobile gamers but we found that the sample games on the  rendered well and were fun to play.

The phone has a new keypad layout and a versatile four-way scroll that makes it easy to navigate the high-resolution colour display. It has been given an urban image says Http1. This type of image is very popular among the younger generation as many clothes shops such as Top Shop/Top Man, New Look, Envy and River Island all have also adopted this image in the new range of clothes that they are providing as it can be seen in their websites.

It is also available in a range of colours giving the selected target market a variety of choice to suit all people choices. It is also light in weight only 83g. People do not want heavy chunky phone as the smaller the lighter the phone the fashionable it will be therefore appealing to younger people.

Lifestyle The type of life style that they will have is that they will be young concerned with fashion and will want the latest technological advances with their phone. In the next section I have looked at what features the Nokia N81 have that make it appeal to it selected target market.

The Nokia N81 is roughly the same size as the popular , but looks quite chunky next to other slim line handsets. It is a stylish phone, though, thanks to its glossy black finish and cool slider design.

The large colour screen takes up most of the front of the handset when closed. The screen is crisp and shows vibrant colours so good for viewing photos, playing games or viewing videos.

As the Nokia N95, the Nokia N81 has been optimised for , which offers music, games, videos and GPS maps for download. You will also be able to store photos on the portal once it's fully launched.

The Nokia N81 is compatible with the newly launched , along with the Nokia N95, and has a user-friendly interface.

Thanks to the 8GB of built-in storage, there's space for plenty of music, all which will be tagged, sorted and synced back with your PC. Dedicated music buttons around the directional pad on the front of the handset makes it easy to access the music player without having to go into the music application.

This leads on to one of our main complaints about the Nokia N81 handset. The hardware design is not the greatest; the buttons are all crammed together and we found ourselves constantly accessing the music player when we wanted to access various other functions using the directional pad.

Ironically, when we did want to use the music player interface, we found that the buttons were not particularly responsive, often needing pressing more than once in order to control desired function.

This is a letdown, especially since we looked forward to the Nokia N81 as a serious contender to the  for example. Next to Apple's iconic handset, or even the Nokia N95, the Nokia N81 is clunky and on the heavy side, weighing in at 140g.

Low-end camera

At 2 megapixels, the camera is on par with that of the Apple iPhone, while the Nokia N95 offers 5 megapixels for example. We would have liked to be able to have a higher-quality camera to complete the Nokia N81 banner as a high-end multimedia machine.

Battery life is good if you just use the phone functions - around five hours - but as soon as you move into heavy music and video use, and web browsing using the Wi-Fi connectivity, you'll be in need of a recharge quicker than we would have expected.

But enough of the gloom. The Nokia N81 is still full of impressive features and will certainly appeal to music and gaming fans. We're just slightly miffed about its poor hardware interface design and it's comparatively heavy weight.

The Features •New Colour Screen: The new colour is new to Nokia one of the first of their kind. It has been long awaited. The Ericsson T68m, which was introduced last year also has a colour screen, it had been proved to be popular among the younger generation giving Nokia the idea to introduce their own colour handset.

• Sound: The phone has Polyphonic sounds played through a speaker to give improved sound quality for ringing tones and message alerts. Quality of sound would be very important to the selected target market as the phone also includes the ability to listen to the Radio. Having a low quality sound would not appeal to this target market this is why the quality of the sound is very important as they want to able to hear the music clearly and at a good volume.

•FM Radio. The phone also has supporting full stereo to get the full advantage of the phone. It also comes equipped with the headphones. The Nokia 8310 also came with this feature and was very much liked by the younger public who bought the phone.

•Games: Java (J2ME) games are also another feature, which Nokia thought would interest the selected target market. The Nokia N81 also comes with 275kb of free space, which allows the user to download approximately 5 games.

•WAP: The phone is also WAP enabled, which allows the user to gain access to certain parts of the ...
