New Walk Museum and Art Gallery is located in the heart of Leicester City. Its 10 minutes walk and 5 minutes drive from the Leicester train station. There are no regular buses which run from station to the museum but council arrange for special tour buses in the summer, from station to the different touring spots, which includes New Walk museum as well.

The museum was established in 1840.It is basically located in one large Victorian style building, close to Leicester University, but is equipped with some modern ad cons. It has got the car park facility also, which can accommodate up to 25 cars. On normal days it attracts on average around 200 people per day. But the number touches to 1000 during peak seasons, which is most of the time in holidays. The entry to the museum is free.

Although it has got different range of galleries and the management has given them numbers as well. But for the sake of simplicity, we will mention the main galleries (which are then actually divided to the sub galleries or kind of sub-section) and give them our own numbering to them to give a clear picture and to avoid any ambiguity. On entrance, it has got a Reception on the right hand side (inside the building). Right next to it, are the stairs which will take you to the first floor Art Gallery. Passing the reception you enter to main sitting hall. This hall has got the seating facility for around 120 persons. Although this is not the cafeteria, but it’s also used as a place where kids get their meals when they visit the museum, because of the size of the cafeteria. On the right hand side of the hall is Gallery 1, which is about Archaeology and Gallery 2, which is having different Minerals and Rocks samples in it.

Now on the left side of the main hall are 2 pathways. First one takes you to the shop and other galleries. Second one takes you to the Gallery 3, which is about Ancient Egyptian History. This Ancient Egyptian History section, at the end, joins the pathway which takes us to the other galleries. Soon as you come out of the Ancient Egyptian History section there is a Shop on your right side, from where you can buy different souvenirs and presents for your friends and family.  In front of the shop is Gallery 4, which is about Wild Space. After passing the gallery 4, you come in to the Main Auditorium and it has got a big stage. The auditorium has got the seating facility for around 180 people. Through auditorium you enter in the Gallery 5 and 6. These are basically used for temporary exhibitions which last, some times, up to 3 months. This is very popular in the general public. Recently, management did an exhibition on Ancient Greek Culture, which drew a large number of people. After passing these galleries, you enter into main cafeteria. And from here, you take the route back to either upstairs (which was closed temporarily) or to the galleries. The museum has got only 1 customer toilet, which is located in the ground floor.

In terms of management, museum has got building management (which generally deals with the maintenance and renovation of the building), staff management, Graphics department, Exhibition department (These include the staff for temporary exhibition too) and special curators for each section.

After going through all the information above, we can now see that the museum has basically got the Functional Layout. Where different people can go in the different sections depending upon their choices or taste. Further, it has got Cell Layout, like archaeology section. Flow of people between different sections (processes) happens in batches if it’s busy. Other wise it’s a random flow. Each gallery and shop, excluding the main auditorium and first floor Art Gallery, can accommodate up to 30 people at a time. First floor gallery (which is also in Cell Layout) has got the capacity of around ...
